Mea Culpa

So, I didn't actually handle yesterday as professionally as I could, because we had another chat today.

Apparently, she wants me to think more (probably a good call).  And she wanted everything all at once so that we'd have several days to look it over in-depth and make changes, because she hates the fact that she misses things almost as much as I ( Read more... )

Some people suck, but you, my dear, are awesome! Don't let any silly teacher ("mentor," my ass) tell you otherwise. So your lesson plans don't meet her standards - she either needs to communicate better, or allow you to make your own mistakes, or watch to see whether your plans actually WILL work, etc. Any of those are constructive options. Making you feel like crap is not constructive.

That being said, suck it up and deal. It is only three more weeks, then you can decide if you want to do this on your own terms or not. Even if you decide to pursue something else (one hopes something better than peddling plastic shoes at Payless- at least get a job at The Shoe Box, girl!), you will then have the degree to cite on future resumes and applications. And that IS something to consider - is it just the teacher making you crazy or is it a combination of things? Don't be afraid to consider your options, _all_ of your options, after graduation. (One of my roommates made it half-way through her student teaching and then decided that she was more interested in tending plants than munchkins, but she still finished the degree before going back to school for plant research. She's never been happier in her job.) Just because you have a degree in something doesn't mean you have to DO that. Don't define yourself by your degree. Evaluate what will make you happiest, and then do THAT. If that is wrangling munchkins, great! You will be able to say that this is the job I trained for, this is the job I love, and I even survived that nutjob, so I can get through any number of crazy coworkers/parents/students too. However, if what will make you happiest is something else (say, developing a satellite-mounted laser beam for destroying your enemies), great! (and I want a copy of the blueprints) It can be scary, but find out what you need to succeed and to be happy, and then pursue it.

You're a smart cookie - follow your heart and you will be able to do whatever you love, and do it well.
