I made this fst for
zupa_nic, since she sends me such lovely links to German music. :D It's an fst for Demain Syndrome, which only now I realise is sort of fitting, as that manga is licensed in German. Oh yay for coincidences. I can't believe I didn't realise that, or I would have done it on purpose. xD
DEMIAN SYNDROME FST (OR MIX, WHATEVER):
I’m very straightforward in my descriptions. I’m sorry.
Why it’s worth reading:
Demian Syndrome is a boy’s love manga by Oki Mamiya. The title refers to a novel by Herman Hesse, Demian, which is supposedly significant if you’ve read it before the manga, although I haven’t. But don‘t worry. Despite a connection to classic literature, the plot has got the usual BL clichés you’d expect: childhood friends falling in love, a boy’s school full of incredibly pretty guys, frequent near death rushes to the hospital, angst, and oh-so-mysterious pasts. What Demian Syndrome has got going for it amidst the clichés, however, is gorgeous art and the ability to end the first volume without so much as a kiss, a profession of love, or anything except lengthy conversations and yet still leaving the reader wanting more. That’s because Demian Syndrome has one of those romance plots that leaves you daydreaming about it in class, that makes your stomach drop at only a significant glance, and that has you still reading when there are years between the volumes’ releases. It’s addictive. There’s suspense (that might or might not be partly caused by how slow Oki Mamiya works). You may want to study German again after three years out of that class because you don’t know Japanese, and Carlsen comics has translated up to volume four with five coming out in July. Who knows?
The series is definitely for the BL reader who wants plot and angst and to squeal over the first kiss. Demian Syndrome relishes anticipation. Then there’s all the lovely angst and oh-so-mysterious past that may just be cliché, but who cares? It’s cliché because we love it.
What it’s about:
(Don’t laugh. The set-up will probably sound cliché, and likely it is, but I love it no less. Also, I describe things poorly, but this description is at least to the point. I keep assuring myself of that.)
Three years after moving to America with his father, sixteen-year-old Joichiro Takayama decides to return to Japan and reenrol in his old school, Johoku. Upon arriving, he finds that his childhood friend, Takashi Nakada, now goes by Azuma and has become exceedingly distant. Optimistically, Takayama tries to rekindle their friendship, but the new Azuma acts coldly and refuses to have anything to do with him. Only tentatively do the boys finally begin to rebuild their bond, however willing or unwillingly. It’s all the way cute and angst-tastic ever after.
About the fst:
Expect no amazingly obscure songs and instrumentals. Or intelligent organisation. I’ll try not to spoil too much in the descriptions for anyone who hasn’t read, since they should. This fst, for convenience and fairness, mainly only goes about as far as Storm in Heaven’s scanlations. Even then it spoils little since it’s really just a bunch of songs I think match the situations and emotions in the manga, not anything in particular. It’s best to read the manga and then listen.
At the very least, the songs can help write fan fiction.
…Please?
Songs are English and Instrumentals mainly, with one Spanish, one Italian, and one Japanese. Classical, rock/pop, singer/songwriter, and jazz are the main genres. Don’t ask how it works. It does. There’s a boy’s choir for all the win.
=================================================================================
First Stage: Processes 1-6
1. chopin concerto in e minor movement 2 romanza
The past: Once there were two boys named Joichiro and Takashi who met in art class. Both shared an interest in Herman Hesse’s Demian. They became instant best friends.
2. leave -matchbox twenty
Takayama leaves for America without giving notice to anyone. Azuma, then “Nadaka”, is understandably crushed that his best and only friend has left him without saying goodbye. Likewise, when Takayama returns to Japan, he is stunned to find his best friend no longer wants him. An ode to miscommunication.
3. got a suitcase got regrets -- tom mcrae
Takayama must return to Johoku. He can’t leave it behind with all his regrets. His traumatic experiences in America have taught him he needs to be with Takashi again.
4. libra me -- a boy’s choir from Granada’s Sherlock Holmes series
5. schubert: ave maria -- joshua bell
Well, Johoku’s an all boy religious school. Heh. That’s my best reason.
6. i wanna ride you -- medski, martin, & wood
Tasuku Sakurai is incredibly gorgeous senior guy, and I’m sure the title reflects what everyone wants to do to him. He kisses Takayama in front of everyone and thinks it’s amusing. In general, he’s meddlesome and intimidating. And he keeps touching everyone. But, he’s been helping Takayama and Azuma so far, along with Shiba the dorm leader. Those two are such sneaky seniors.
7. once -- glen hansard
Title track. Takayama returns to Japan and realises just how far apart he and the new “Azuma” have grown.
8. the scientist [coldplay cover] -- avril lavigne (trust me, it ain’t bad)
Takayama came back to Japan to be with Azuma again. Azuma promises to try to start over in their relationship, but will it last?
Pre-Second Stage: S.O.S. (scratch of symptom)
9. Berceuse / Lullaby op. 57 -- preformed by Peter Schmalfuss
The two try to pick up were they left off. It’s an effort for both, and perhaps in vain. But, Takayama has to think positive.
Pre-Second Stage: A Tunnel Panic
10. get yourself together -- submarine races
A song for Kurachi, although I adore him. He annoy me sometimes.
11. soma -- ken oak
This is the conversation of Kurachi and Takayama underground.
Second Stage: #1 Affection
12. take me nowhere -- medski, martin, & wood
Kobayashi sounds like this. His music may not, but he does. Very cool and yet wiser than a cool person needs to be. He’s dorm leader Shiba’s long lost cooler twin.
Second Stage: #2 Earnest Wish
13. hey jealousy -- gin blossoms
Takayama may be a little jealous of Akio at first, but he’s stuck where he’s at, wherever that is.
14. sake in the jar -- the chieftains ft. akiko yano
Takayama meets Akio and finds her awesome. Her kimono dressing deceiving ways are most fun. The two of them are instant girlfriends. Azuma can only grumble when he sees them. (This song is more atmosphere than literally about Akio. Song’s in Japanese, which I don’t know, but in my mind I suppose it fits by what it’s supposedly about.)

Later Tracks: Mix Two
These I will very lightly explain these tracks, since I don’t want to spoil anything. Most are silly jokes anyways.
1. american girls -- couting crows
Takayama claims he left ten girlfriends behind him in America.
2. il bimbo dentro -- tiziano ferro
Azuma begins talking to his inner past self about his feeling for Takayama. Takayama starts seeing his own inner children. (I think I know what this song is about correctly, but I had to find it translated into Spanish and then translate that to English to understand because the song is Italian and I pretty much don’t know the beginning or end of that language. The title is [very] basically something like “the child inside”, though maybe I’m idiot.)
3. leave - glen hansard
It’s all Azuma wants of Takayama, but the Takayama says he won’t leave again.
4. amarte duele -- julieta venegas
For events at the end of volume four. Generic depressing love song. It hurts to love a person, but you won’t leave them. The title is fairly obvious, basically “it hurts to love you” since I’m such a poetic translator.
