Last night was the Mastodon and Dethklok concert at The Fillmore Charlotte and I have the aches to prove it.

I went with Sidney, who is also a fan of Dethklok and Mastodon. The Fillmore is a cool little venue, it's really intimate. On either side of the entrance were the merchandise booths and PS3s with Brutal Legend on them. I quickly bought this t-shirt before heading to the floor. High on Fire was the first band and we stayed a little bit back for them, about 25 feet away from the stage. The energy was great and the lead guitarist/vocalist was really into it, but the music was mediocre and pretty forgettable. Converge, the shittiest band, was second on stage. Some of the instrumentals were impressive, but for the most part, it was way too repetitive and the vocalist did nothing but shriek into the mike. Scene kids probably came in their pants as soon as they heard them. It was painful to say the least.

Somehow Sidney and I were able to move up to about 7 feet away from the stage before Mastodon. We were packed in like sardines and it was starting to get really hot. They played the entire album "Crack the Skye" with some really trippy artwork as the backdrop. It looked like pixels from where I was for most part, but it was still pretty cool. The music was penetrated really deeply; every emotion bubbled to the surface and it felt like the only thing that mattered was that moment in time. The songs are really flowing and ethereal, they sound like dreams. Halfway through their performance a drunk girl came up to me and snaked her arm around my waist. I didn't really know what to do but I kept quiet and she started rubbing my arm. She eventually looked over at me and screamed "It's okay, I'm just trying not to fall down!" XD; After a while she left because she had to go smoke. By now people had started to crowd surf and a lot of people were struggling to stay up. About three people almost fell on their heads. Luckily, every time someone was able to grab their ankles and hoist them back up. During Mastodon's encore people started moshing and I was in the heart of it. I wasn't willing to back down and give away my space but I almost got squished several times. I was pushed into other people while I was headbanging and I hit my septum around three times. It hurt so badly I had to take a few deep breaths so I wouldn't have to leave the pit. I got seperated from Sidney and some guy ended up helping push this really heavy dude off of me. I love it when little things like that happen during concerts. As soon as they finished, Brent Hinds (the lead guitarist) threw is pick into the crowd near me. Me and about 5 guys dove for it, but I snatched it up first~. :D

Dethklok was the band I was looking the most forward to and in my opinion, it was the best. By now I was about 5 feet from the stage. They opened with a funny little intro on the screen behind them as kicked it off with Deththeme. The crowd went batshit and everyone started pushing and screaming, it was fantastic. I don't really remember the order but they played Bloodlines, Murmaider, Go Into the Water, Birthday Dethday, Hatredcopter, Duncan Hills Coffee Jingle, The Gears, Burn the Earth, Black Fire Upon Us, Deth Support, and Thunderhorse. Every song was filled to the brim with an intensity that shook me to my core that reminded me a pentecostal church. It's funny how I think I appreciate a piece of music until I see it, hear it, and feel it live. Live music is almost inebriating and orgasmic. The drums were the loudest part of the band; I could feel the metal in my septum vibrating. It was awesome to see a bunch of men in their mid to late 40's belting it out and blowing everyone else there away. Before the encore, Brendon Small started doing all of the voices, which was pretty cool. They played Fansong for an encore.

I didn't realize how badly I hurt until after the show. I could barely turn my head, raise my arms, or drag my feet. I pretty much sank into the seat when Sidney and I got into the car. We ate Taco Bell for dinner and I ended up getting home around 12:45.

The only thing keeping me okay today is Nos Energy Drink and Ibuprofen, but I'm still achy. It was so worth it, though. My mom picked up my new camera yesterday, so I'll take pictures of everything tomorrow. Right now I just want to get some rest.
