Funny how you never know how long or detailed each section will be. For such an actionless bit, this one had a lot of Google checking needed. And it contains a lot of my past in puzzle pieces.

There are names specific to the Vineyard too-- I went to school with them: Athern, Mayhew, Luce, Riggs, Vanderhoop, Vincent, Pease, also, many of the Vinyard names are Portugese in origin: Silva, Estrella, DaRosa...

The Portugese came from the Azores, working the whale ships. Msny many settled on the Cape, but many came and stayed on the Vineyard too.

I had fun writing this bit of story. Saphronia had a lot to say! I hope you don't find Miss Starbuck and her house utterly impossible.

Sometimes I save these little longer pieces for later, reading them when I don't feel rushed. I've finally read this one and I'm glad I did.

The bit about the sugar reminded me of some trivia I learned when we were involved with colonial re-enactments/making colonial clothing/doing colonial dancing, etc. We learned that sugar was rare and expensive (here in New England, honey and maple syrup were far more common). Expensive cane sugar came wrapped in blue paper, which was then used to dye cloth for gowns. Wearing a blue gown was a subtle way of "showing off" your wealth/importance, etc.

Lyrical writing as usual!
And would it be personal experience when it comes to the fear for loved ones at sea, by any chance?
Enjoyed it very much
