Gray Stripes: The Decade-long Dress...

Nov 17, 2015 02:27

Hello, fellow lolis. I just wanted to share a dress I finished. You older lolis from way back when might remember my post with gray stripe accessories back in 2006. They were supposed to be part of a set I was making called "Gray Stripes" but never got around to finishing. Weelll, I finally finished the dress after almost TEN freakin years of procrastinating. ^^; Talk about late... It's nothing fancy, but I like how it turned out. Anyway, what do you think?

Gray Stripes JSK Set

DRESS. I like that this came out as a simple design. I wanted something that was simple and elegant without being plain. I think the design works with the pattern of the fabric to create something almost steampunk-ish. It's got a light victorian flair without losing the style of gothic lolita. A little dated? Maybe. I did start this a long time ago.

SIDE. The bustle in the back was a challenge to do as I've never sewn anything like that before. The same for the over skirt. Initially, I was going to add ruffle details to the back ties, but opted for simplicity to mimic the straps. Continuity.

DETAILS. Of all the bows, only the one on the chest is permanently attached. The shirring in the back was a nightmare to do...also a first time. I had lost one of the elastic in one of the casings and it took thirty minutes to fish out. The ruffles, however were a breeze. A ruffle foot attachment was a good investment. Also, that ruffle detail at the waistline really makes the dress, I think.

BOWS. I was initially unhappy with the placement of the big ones but was happy with my solution: make them detachable. With the bows like this, I can style this dress any way I want to, like so...from no bows to all bows attached.

COORDINATE #1. The headband that was based from Victorian Maiden. Simple and everyday wear. Add a black blouse for a dark look or a white blouse for a lighter look. I was also thinking that this can go retro, depending on the hairstyle and shoes. Very versatile day dress!

COORDINATE #2. Mini top hat made from scratch. It's a heavy little thing so it's reinforced with a headband and a comb. The hat itself is very pretty...I can see myself wear this separately with an actual victorian bustled dress. Also, for me, this ensemble is more formal.

There are some flaws to this dress, I can see that. But for now, I'm going to bask in the glow of my achievement and fix those (maybe) later on. Zipper on the side or something since it's a pull-on at the moment. And yes, it's a plus-sized loli dress. And yes, the hat is the same one that's on my icon. :)
