Hi, I'm a newbie just starting out though I've been watching this community for like five years? I've only recently slowly started building my wardrobe.

Suggestions for a formal/prom suitable Lolita outfit? )

I would suggest buying a dress made of satin or chiffon for a formal, evening look.
IMO even a nice cotton dress looks way too casual in a prom setting.

Oh yes, thanks for that suggestion. I'll most probably go for chiffon then, I love it so much<3

I'd definetely go for something semi-princess like, and wear the JSK/OP without a blouse :) Fancy fabrics etc, an no print. More ruffles and neat details, less lace and bows.

Like AATP's Gather Chiffon JSK?

Or something more classic Lolita? http://i54.tinypic.com/21mgqcp.jpg or http://31.media.tumblr.com/tumblr_lgb1zzIDOW1qc5rmzo1_400.jpg

I like details on dresses too! Which is why I love Lolita.
The gathered chiffon looks nice, I like the classic ones too, just not so sure if it'd fit into the setting.
Thanks!

I second this one, I wore the cream version of this dress to my prom and it turned out great. I got plenty of complements and it was perfect for the summer weather.

but yeah, many of the strapless satin or chiffon Jsks will probably work out just as well.

I own a gorgeous dress that if I had owned back in high school would have loved to wear to prom. It's by Alice and the Pirates and it's called "Crystal Drop".

Looks like this:

There's currently one on sale on Mbok in wine red that might be even better for prom because it's a bit brighter...but it's a little bit more of a "Vampire" vibe (which I personally love but it depends on you).

Seconding this suggestion; I feel that the print/cut of this jsk still manages to catch the eye, but isn't too "in your face". The detailing around the neckline strikes me as very elegant, where as the hem has a nice free sort of appearance. I would have definitely worn this to my prom too!

Oh the print looks so nice! I've never seen that before, so thanks for suggesting it!
Actually, I quite like the vampire vibe. And it is a nice shade of red.
