AP tights size

Nov 08, 2013 21:52

I'm about to purchase an AP Dream Sky set (salopette, tights, and hair clip) off of Ebay, for anyone that has worn AP tights, is it one size fits all? I'm 5'9 (175 cm) and I weigh 141 lbs (63 kg) (which is normal for my height).

I don't think they'd fit. I have the Dream Sky tights, I'm 5'6" and 125lb and I had to pinch every last cm to get them up.

So I take, AP tights are not too friendly for those with wider hips and thighs?

I agree with the comment below saying it's more about measurements than weight but it's also about height to weight ratio. Let's say you have large thighs/hips but you're 5 feet tall....that would probably be fine fit-wise, considering the tights can fit someone taller; the extra material would just stretch width-wise and not length-wise. However if you were 5'4 AND had large hips/thighs there would be no extra material so you wouldn't be able to bring them all the way up. Another thing to think about regardless of height/weight is that AP tights are really thick and "stiff", they really are kind of a cloth-like material and so if the cloth gets stretched to capacity the print "separates" into the lines of the fabric. Not only would that crack the print, it makes the print look weird (AP socks that have embroidery have a similar issue). Of course if it's the thigh area nobody will see it, but for the price I'd be concerned about the print cracking and the tights running. I will say that after reading previous posts about AP tights on ( ... )

Thank you for this extensive reply! I appreciate it. It was also very helpful. I'm going to have to write off AP tights as I'm definitely in the higher range for hips & thighs even though I'm 5'3.

Though, I see brands putting up tight fabric OTKs, are they similar in fabric to AP's tights? Random question...and slightly unrelated but I figure I ask anyway.

It's more about your hip/thigh measurement, moreso than weight since everyone carries weight differently. I weigh more but I have narrow hips and thighs and I can wear AP's tights fine. But I think you may have some difficulty at 5'9". They tend to run shorter and are very thick and stiff, and aren't super-stretchy. I read somewhere of someone being 5'7" and wearing them okay though.

I agree, I am narrow through the hips and thighs and at 5'7" they fit OK. But any taller and they might not actually stretch enough.

You can always turn the tights into OTKs:

Cut them up the top, cover the cut edge in clear nail polish, grab a sewing machine and do a zig zag stitch along the top while stretching it out. You'll want something to hold them up though, like a garter belt.

Seconding this! Whenever I order tights online and they end up not fitting properly (I'm also tall, so often times they're too short) I just cut the hip-part of them off and sew down the edge and wear them like thigh high socks with a garter belt instead. It looks the same and I actually find it more comfortable than tights!

I'm 5'9" and considerably fatter than the OP and what I do for lolita (though to be fair I've never done it with brand) is try the tights on carefully to see where they come up to without breaking, then cut a plain pair of tights that I know fit me off where the pretty tights come up to on my legs. I keep the crotch bit and discard the bottom of the legs. I then cut the legs off the pretty tights at the top by the crotch and then sew them to the crotch and top of legs bit of my plain tights on my sewing machine, using zigzag stitch and stretching them as much as I possibly can as I sew. I then make darn sure I wear a pair of bloomers so you can't see the frankentights at the top.
It's not as elegant a solution as turning them into knee highs, but it makes sure they stay up properly and you don't have to faff with suspenders or garters.

They won't fit. I'm 5'3, of normal weight with not particularly large hips, and they fit just right. If I were skinnier they would obviously be looser on me but that wouldn't make up 6 inches of height difference. I don't think anyone no matter how skinny at 5'9 could get the crotch of those tights anywhere near where it's supposed to be. Girls here are not 5'9 so the "one size fits all" tights aren't made for girls that tall. :/ I looked on the back of a pair of Holy Lantern tights and Day Dream Carnival tights, both say "M-L" with no actual heigh/weight ratio measurements, but I'm 100% positive that you will not get those tights all the way up at 5'9. Most one size fits all tights here in Japan are actually rather long waisted and I can bring the waist up to way above my belly button, but not Angelic Pretty tights. They're very much made for the 5'0-5'4 crowd. You could consider, however, turning the tights into knee highs if you have sewing know-how? Personally I think that if you are going to do that, though, you're better off ( ... )

I have to agree with everything that's been said. :( I have the Misty Sky tights and they fit me perfectly at 5'2"/117lbs, so I think they're definetly going to be too short for someone 5'9" (assuming AP uses the same sizing for all their tights). They really aren't as forgiving as Taobao/tattoo tights.
