I've been discovering all manner of awesome free online tools lately. And now for the portion of my entry that sounds like every spam you ever get. I swear, it's me just pimping out stuff I like.
Want to check your credit score for free, as often as you like?
CreditKarma I really like CreditKarma. You just go and click each time you want your score and it tracks the values. It really only changes about once a month so you don't need to go nuts.
Want to get a snapshot of all your money in one place?
MintRudder Mint.com is super sweet. It's like Money or Quicken lite. I was able to immediately see that Bank of America had canceled an old account that I don't use (but had entered into mint to keep an eye on) when it started showing my available credit on that account as $0. They have a lovely little iPhone app too.
Rudder is similar, I've only just started using it though so I don't have it all set up yet. It shows some different stuff from mint, a little more detailed I think.
Want to be rid of your filing cabinet?
Google Docs I LOVE nearly everything Google makes. Seriously. They stick "beta" on something and make no promises but it's free to play with. Google Docs holds all manner of paperwork, notes on my projects and receipts for my taxes. I have a local backup on my network server, but
My scanner will scan something to a PDF, and Google docs will store PDFs too. So I started scanning old files I don't really need the originals for but would like to keep just in case and I stick them up there. I've got spreadsheets with my logins to all manner of various sites stored there. Serial numbers for software I use everywhere - stuff like that. I love just being able to get at all my stuff in one place!
Write code? Love versioning?
CVSdudeTortoise SVNEditPlus Okay this one isn't free entirely but damn, I love it. I check all my code into subversion, and download a copy whenever I need to edit something. When I'm done with my changes I check it back in with a handy little note on what I changed (I'm a rabid commenter). So I never accidentally lose changes I've made to my client sites now!
My typical process looks like this: I set up a Subversion local directory with Tortoise SVN. I edit my files directly in that folder using Editplus. Editplus is has a built-in very basic FTP that I use to automagically upload to a site. When all the editing is done I use Tortoise SVN to check everything back in.
And thus ends my love-spam. Please to enjoy my recommendations!
