It's my scheduled feel-like-shitty-arse day today too, but for different reasons. Am sending druggy-goodness vibes your way!
What's your vegetarian reason? Just out of curiosity. I swear, I am so on the border of going that way myself, but I don't think it'll happen while I'm living with meat eaters at least.
I don't "feel sorry" for the widdle aminals, really. It's just an ugly ugly industry. When I just sit and think about how many animals are slaughtered to feed all the fatties in queue at McDonald's I want to vomit. I definately do not want to contribute to that.
I eat some meats, like fish. It simplifies things when I have to cook for my children. I wouldn't call myself a vegetarian. But the soup yesterday was my first meat (besides fish) in months.
That's pretty close to what my own reasoning is. Living in Japan taught me that I really don't need to eat meat as much as I did, especially beef - the worst offender. Environmental reasons as well as just to do with wanting to seperate myself from dependence on meat, or an addiction or any taking for granted that it ought to be in every meal when I'd do better to replace it with other foods.
That said, god, I love it sometimes. But I try (and have to try less the more I do it) to choose foods without meat or at least without beef as often as I can.
I wish I liked fish more. I can only handle occasional, 'mild' fish like tuna.
I eat only milder fish as well, and rarely. Salmon is as "crazy" as I get. I'm not one for "fishy" tastes all that much. I refuse to eat other seafood like shrimp or prawns. Urrk.
Beef is what I avoid the most, which is why I felt so guilty about the soup.
And meat, I do love it at times too. Although I think I'm strange. The only meat that really gets me to "cheat" on my diet is things like hotdogs. :/ Anything else I can really do without.
It took me a year or two of gradually cutting meat out when I decided to become vegetarian. Don't be too hard on yourself! It gets easier as you learn more and more recipes and food sources. Besides, if you don't have ethical reasons (like I do), there's no reason not to have a little in soup when you're sick.
What I meant was, you don't have ethical reasons of not wanting to kill the "widdle aminals," you just don't like the meat industry. It is possible that if we all cut down to a small amount of meat, we would not need to do factory farming, so I think you can ethically justify eating a little bit every now and then. Maybe I misunderstood your comment above?
I guess you can beat yourself up if it wasn't "free range" meat, but, it does pass the Kantian test of ideals. Really, at the end of the day, I guess it's just your personal call what does and doesn't seem ethical!
...By the way, you mentioned in another comment (since my previous one) that you will "cheat" for hot dogs. That is interesting! The meat eaters in my life (I'm one of the only vegetarians I know) all think that the "fake" hotdogs taste better than the real thing. Unlike other meat (especially bacon) where the substitutes made out of tofu or tempeh or seitan don't taste as good to them.
