I haven't posted here in forever. I can only think it is because I have been posting little snippets several times a day on Facebook. I know, I'm a two timer. You're just going to have to get over it.
That being said, some of the things that have been going on since graduating from college... I applied for a got a position as an AmeriCorps VISTA. This is largely a volunteer position. It comes with a "modest" living stipend, health benefits, vacation, sick and personal time and four days of training in Philidelphia, all expenses paid. I know I have to attend workshops while I am there, but I am looking forward to it, like a vacation. You can't sit in seminars ALL day.
I will be a project coordinator for a program called "Money in Your Pocket". It provides free tax preparation for low and moderate income families. I will have 13 sites in three counties to oversee, and the coordinators of those sites oversee about 160 volunteers. I'm pretty excited about it and a little apprehensive. It's a lot of responsibility.
The girl child hasn't been able to come home for a visit yet; we are hopeful that she will come o=home this weekend. Only she can determine that.
I've been doing some other volunteer work around town. The Shippensburg Coalition for change has been working on getting some workshops together to help people sign their children up for the Children's Health Insurance Program. Today was our first workshop and we helped two families. We have another workshop scheduled for tomorrow afternoon and a 3rd scheduled for Wednesday evening. We are hoping to have a workshop about once a month to get as many kids signed up as we can.
After this, we are going to work on helping the local food bank provide better, more nutritional food to the community. Right now, the food they provide is packaged and dependent on whatever the community will donate. We are hoping to get them connected to the local producers so we can provide produce, eggs and other things that those in extreme poverty have to go without. We're also planning a car wash to raise some funds to cover the cost of our printing and other supplies.
On the 7th of July the Shippensburg time Bank is coming to the house for a pot luck dinner and I have been trying to generate interest among my other groups hoping to connect them with each other and make sure we have a good turn out.
July 10th is my birthday and SCC (Shippensburg coalition for Change) is having a meeting here around 6, followed by a gathering around 8 before some friends and I head out for a Pub Crawl.
Around the 15th the boy child and I are heading north. We're staying with my dad for a couple of nights and then heading off to Connecticut to see my mother. I had hoped to stay with my mother in her home because I really need some home time. It's been a rough few months with the girl and graduation overlapping. But there isn't room, so we'll be in a hotel again. Hopefully, I will be able to take my son to the beach and then head up to Boston with my sister. I think I will take him to see the USS Constitution. I remember my visit there as one of the nicer of my childhood memories.
We'll be back in time for my son's dad to take him for a few days to a week or so. The is due to overlap my training in Phili. cross your fingers, readers, that I don't get let down again.
I think that brings you up to speed. Other things I have commented on at Facebook: Iran solidarity, my heart goes out to them and I hope they don't give up in their fight to have legitimate elections. Also, I have decided that blueberry pie with vanilla yogurt on it is the bomb. I have also been going to the doctor a lot lately, trying to figure out why I am so tired all the time, am having blood pressure issues, and can't get rid of my headache for more than a day at a time. I've had a pretty speading throb for about 8 months. The doctor has some ideas about what's going on but I need one more test before he can make it official, so I won't speculate here.
that's about it. If you are local and would like to come along on the Pub crawl and haven't gotten an invitation through Facebook, just shoot me a message. It wasn't personal, I probably just didn't figure you would want to come. The more the merrier!
