I really really like ‘Choke.’ The art-ificial things we do to feel alive. Is addiction just taste? Isn’t it a survival instinct? And does artifice lead the way to a more natural existence? Like it’s a pathway? I feel that way sometimes. Like artifice is the key to understanding life. Because how else does it make sense? I am one of those co-dependents who thinks that anything that feels good can’t be all bad. I’ll never tell someone to not have a drink. I respect going for what you love even if it kills you. But addiction is pretty ugly when it comes down to it, so… It’s hard to know what to believe. That’s probably just naivete on my part. But I think about Greek myths and comic books and the things people believe in despite of themselves. How some things are deemed worthy of addiction and some never are. The status symbol of an addiction. And all the hidden thoughts that I sometimes believe could save everyone if they were just spoken aloud. How nothing is strange given the full real spectum in all its glory.
It reminds me of Harry Crews’ ‘Feast of Snakes.’ He has a character named Duffy Deeter who thinks of war and holocaust when he’s in bed with a girl in a trailer and everyone is killing snakes outside. It’s hardcore. But Pahlaniuk has some hope and humor. I think both have published stuff in Playboy. Harry Crews is pretty amazing. And he lives in Gainesville. A friend of mine is collecting every book he’s ever published. The only author I’ve tried to do that with is Dennis Cooper. Who has a new book out in a month and a half called ‘God Jr.’ Every time Dennis Cooper or Radiohead release something my life kind of explodes. I hear Radiohead is in the studio now.
So, on 60 Minutes last night there was a story about a Hobbit-like human species found on an Indonesian island. They lived 18,000 years ago and hunted small Komodo dragons and elephants the size of cows. They lived in caves up on volcanoes and had very hairy bodies and brains one-third the size of our human species. I wonder what will be discovered in my lifetime that will change everything.
