Fic!!!!!!! Fic!!!!!!!

I guess my Red Hood is a kinder, gentler, more Jason-y kind of guy. I still think this characterization can work. It depends on how much you take his attitude at face value, I guess. Oh, and a big Thanks! to monkeycrackmary for supplying comics fodder and for petronelle for lovely Robinsex inspiration and rubynye for encouragement. I hope this one’s a ( Read more... )

Hi there! Glad you liked. In this story, the flashback of Jason being tied up in the cave is canon (Nightwing: Year One). As far as Red Hood goes, we still know very little, even though months have passed. Red says he’s Jason, and his DNA holds up, but we don’t know how he’s back. It was all kind of frustrating. Everything we’d been able to predict about Red (his decision to kill, his goal to be a better Batman, his bitterness) turned out to be true. Bruce, for his part, has said a few short vague sentences about how he feels and stares sadly at the case. Though apparently Jason was there during ‘Hush’ for awhile, and fought Robin. I’m really not sure about all the details, but Red Hood is kind of a no-frills kind of guy with a few leftover flourishes from his sidekick days (and some neat-o toys) who seems to enjoy machine guns and knives for decapitation. He’s like the most basic kind of post-Crisis Jason, the kind of Jason people seem to remember, without the small details and complicated background and history that we all tend to build around him from pre-death issues. My characterization doesn’t fit him all that well, from what we have seen so far. When I write Jason, I have all the Jasons in my head, from pre-Crisis blond Jason to ghost Jason in Nightwing’s book. It’s kind of a continuity nightmare, but it probably allows me to write like I do without everyone coming after me screaming Mary Sue. Shrug.
Have you stopped buying comics? I've definitely been slacking off too. I was done. And then Hush came. And then Red Hood.
I mean, I love Batman comics, don’t get me wrong. But after reading two decades’ worth of storylines (even on and off) it gets frustrating sometimes to see the same variations on the same themes over and over again. There are some excellent storylines in there, and some stand-out issues even in the worst storylines. But I find myself less than anxious to run out and buy the latest Nightwing angst-fest issue and the latest Batman comic where Bruce has the same memory about Jason or just stares at the case for some reason or another. Then again, my two favorite Bat characters (Azrael and Jason) have been killed off because fans hated them, and Robin is my favorite even though he is widely hated as well. But like other slashers, I like to believe that there’s still a place for a fan like me, even if I have to make it myself. Sorry for the rant! Thanks for your comment, as always : )

Ah, I see now. I like that you write with your own idea of Jason - it shows creativity and initiative to take what you want out of a fandom. Or something good like that. ^^

I haven't stopped buying comics, but often I end up spending a lot on underground ones and have no money left for the mainstream. The only comic I really collect now is Robin, but I buy the ocassional TPB of past issues I've missed. Actually to tell the truth, I really only buy Batman comics now if they have eye-catching art. The stories are not as unpredictable or moving as they used to be.

Your description of the way the comics have become is dead on. Robin is my favourite now as well - I actually didn't learn most hated him until I was browsing movie message boards. "Do you want Robin in a future movie?" - almost everyone said no but me. *hugs Robin* I don't really understand it - personally I think Batman is terribly boring without a Robin in his life - they all bring out those hidden parts of him if that makes any sense at all...I guess not. :)

Anyway, I guess the slashers have to stick together, huh? ^^

You are so cool. What underground comics do you like? If you don't mind saying. I recently noticed the shop down the street has a ton of indie comics but I don't know which ones to check out. I used to read Stray Bullets and The Badger and random trade paperbacks, but nothing really underground.

I can't tell if mainstream comics are changing, or if I'm just getting older. And while Robin can be done poorly, if he's done well it's the best thing on earth!!! I love Robin. Batman is cool even without Robin, but I doubt I'd have loved him this long if it wasn't for the Boy Wonder. Robin is just one of those rare things that I always marvel at because I can't believe it exists. Like, proof of god or something. Because he doesn't make sense, and yet he's perfect. And yeah, if it wasn't for other slashers, I'd have fallen down some lonely hole of despair long ago :)
