We spent a lot of time waiting for things today. Waiting for Chloe to get here so we could go over and see the grandboys open their presents, waiting for the ham to be done so I could put the potatoes in the oven, waiting for Mike to get here so we could eat dinner and open presents.
Dave gave me a new bike. I call her Black Beauty. She is a black Giant bike that used to belong to one of his friend's wives. He had heard that they wanted to sell it about a month ago and I had told him he probably shouldn't get it - too expensive. Not that I wouldn't like a better bike but I just didn't think we should be spending money on that kind of thing right now. So it was a complete surprise when they wheeled her in the room this morning. As we were waiting and waiting for other things I kept saying I wish I could take it for a ride - a real ride. Dave said why not? He'd go and Johnny wanted to go too. So we quickly loaded the bikes up and went to the bike trail in town. It was cold but not that bad with a scarf and gloves. Black Beauty has a little computer on the handle bars that tells you how fast you are going, how far you have gone, calories burned, the time, etc. One of the first warnings in the manual is to not watch the computer while you are riding. (Can you guess where this story is going now?) I thought it was so neat to see I was traveling at 10 mph and was pushing buttons on it to see other things when I went off the bike path and then swerved back on again and wreaked. I was glad I was wearing a helmet. I noted that thought as it went through my mind when my head bounced off the pavement. Amazingly I didn't get hurt except my left hand but I *feel like* that might be broken. I took my rings off right away thinking there would soon be swelling and there was. I'm not ready to go to the ER - will see how things are tomorrow. I'm taking Motrin for now. We finished the ride with me babying my hand and I can still use the index finger and thumb so I'm not totally incapacitated by the injury. I'm even typing with it now but painfully. The injury seems be be over the knuckle part of the hand near the ring finger and that is the finger that hurts the most. I can always remember this Christmas as the Christmas I fell off my new bike. Another good thing - it has totally taken my mind off the tooth that was hurting before. I haven't given a bit of thought to that tooth since the fall and before that it was my main concern. I like a hurting hand way better than a hurting tooth...
