I was able to get up early and get out while the sun was still low this morning. Decided to walk to DeSoto National Monument and try to get to the far tip of the land point there. The bugs were fine while I walked the streets till I got to the park and entered “the jungle”. I was immediately swarmed by mosquitoes. I took along one of the Off botanical towelettes and it really worked! That’s good to know. I will just carry a fresh packet in my bag in the future. I took lots of infrared pictures (of course).
Ibis I think. I liked that big bubble of light from the sun.
Big showy flower.
Finally got a good picture of some Spanish moss.
The IR camera didn't take a very clear photo. It says: THE LANDING . Late in the afternoon of May 20, 1530 DeSoto's armada of nine ships rode at anchor in a deep Florida bay. Decks and holds were heavily burdened with 700 men, 350 horses, packs of bloodhounds and Irish greyhounds, a herd of pigs and a profusion of arms and equipment necessary to sustain the expedition of conquest. The following day, indifferent to plumes of Indian signal smoke rising from the dense thickets, the men disembarked with high expectations. They had heard rumors that these lands would yield even more gold, silver, precious gems and slaves than all of Mexico and Peru. Horrifying. They were ruthless.
Nice walkway over the swamp.
Didn't sit down. Didn't want to tempt the bugs since I had been doing so good.
This was a neat looking fruit or seed pod. Magnolia.
Our get-together/dinner last night was good. After dinner 7 of us played a card game called Golf. I wish I could assemble a group up north that was as enthusiastic about playing games. Games are just a nice way to be together with people. Maybe if I was more forceful in rounding up people…
Hot again today. Heat index of 103F. Now that I’ve written this I think it’s time for a swim.
