It's going to be a lovely fall day today. Dave is doing his favorite thing (going fishing) and I am going to do my favorite thing too: hiking with Rainy. I just need to figure out where I want to go. I go to Two Mile most the time because it is the closest place and I don't like using up gas but maybe it'd be nice to go somewhere farther for a change - I have all day: Oil Creek or Kennerdell Tract, or Erie Wildlife Refuge?

Thinking about this date: October 10th. This is the date that Grandma S died in 1956. I was 3. I can remember around that same time when the priest came and gave her some kind of sacrament with a cross and candles. She was in her bed in the middle bedroom. I can also remember the day they took her out of the house when she fell and broke her hip. She was in pain. Her look of misery was burned into my little brain that day. So many of my early, first memories have Grandma S in them. Memories of her playing the record player so I could dance to the music or listen to stories on it, her teaching me how to pump and swing on the swing, memories of me looking over from my crib and seeing her in her bed.

This was the cross she had hanging on the wall beside her bed. My "altar" has become very dusty like so many other things in this room. I set this space up in 2013 when we moved back into this house and it's barely been touched since. I need to dust it and redo it one of these days.

Anyway! On to a beautiful autumn day outdoors.
