and then there were 6

A little sad. Dave told me that he found 3 places down by this garden where there were puffs of black feathers. It was Pip. She's the chicken who was just recently broody. She only came out of that broodiness about a week ago. Dave said if I had just given her some baby chicks to raise she would have been safe in the little coop raising them right now and not taken by a fox or whatever did get her. But then they would have gotten a different bird instead I suppose. I wasn't that attached to Pip. She got her name Pip because she didn't like being held as a baby chick and would PEEP! so loudly and struggle when I tried to hold her. She never did become friendly to humans. I'm just sad because I have lost a chicken. I liked seeing my whole flock of 7 doing their chicken-y things together out there.

On a happier note...

Walked with Rainy this morning at Two Mile - went about 3 miles over the top of Black Gum Hill and back. Did some exploring on new trails that I had no idea were there before. Wasn't lost but I was a little bewildered. It's the usual thing at Two Mile - trails that don't go anywhere. They go for a while and then peter out and you have to back track. Afterwards we (Rainy and I) had lunch at The Cabin on the Lake, a new concession stand at the swimming beach. I had the fish basket. Rainy didn't eat anything that I tried to offer her. Just hid under my seat and shivered. She definitely is a shy little thing.

Just one single black cohosh plant in the woods. I think they smell awful but just now in looking it up it says that some people think it smells okay. Another one of those cases of people having different smell sensors I guess.

A nice little grove of pines with a couple logs to sit on. I think I can find this place again even though it was in the middle of a bunch of dead end trails. It'll be a good place to have a rest. Next time I go I'm going to explore more in this area.

My picnic table at The Cabin on the Lake. Waiting for the main course. I was there at 1:30. If there was a lunch rush it was over by then. The fish was good and the French fries were excellent.

hiking alone, pip the chicken, rainy, black cohosh, 2 mile run, death, cabin on the lake
