first attempt
As a trial I used a square of woven wool for the background that I didn't like the colors of anyway. I don't know many embroidery stitches yet, though I did watch a you-tube that showed 10 beginners stitches. Enough to get started - to see if I would actually like embroidery - all the fussiness of it. I do like it. And I'm sure I can do better.
I'm going to get some kind of papery stuff that you attach to your background that you can draw your design on to help you lay it out. It melts away in water later when you are done. That should help.
