It was - we might become regulars too - though I don't know how much longer this can go on - Kay is 94.

Ohmy! Pete and I remember Kay's! We ate there a few times when we lived in Oil City and before we moved to Colorado...the late 60s. I do remember it was a fancy place to eat, and I do remember some of the decor. I'm thinking I remember the checker board floor. I wish you had taken more pictures (maybe next time) to jog my memory. I remember the fire though, unless there's been more than one fire. Pete remembers Kay and just commented that she was a very attractive lady. He also remembers that there was a big bar that was quite a money maker and a big draw back in the day.

I was actually a little embarrassed to take pictures. I felt like I would be revealing someone's home. So we just stuck to the entrance where no one could see us taking this one. I guess her husband ran the bar out front, but after he passed away she did but it was too much. So now it's just the buffet on Friday night. We didn't get to meet her. She was upstairs someone said. She gets too fatigued to work anymore. The bar was beautifully set up though empty.

Kay's sounds like one of those local treasures that will go on as long as she does. And that, even as a shadow of its (her) former (younger) self, it's still quite amazing. Back in the '50s, my parents used to take us on Sunday drives through all the little towns in Erie and Crawford and who-knew-what-other counties and, often as not, we'd end up someplace like Kay's for dessert, if not lunch or dinner ( ... )

Ah, sorry for being long-winded as well as forgetting to log on. That's me above.

Yes, I see this place as very personal to her. And it will last as long as she does, even in a weakened state since she is quite old now.

Funny how those old memories can be so sweet.

I had thought it closed a long time ago from the way the front was overgrown with weeds and there is no sign of it being open, but we went to the side door, and it was open. Interesting cause of its long history. And good food, still, after all these years.

That looks and sounds like an amazing place. I love retro, especially old music.

We might need to go back so I can take photos. I see now that they have a facebook page with some photos so I suppose they don't mind showing the decor. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Kays-Smorgasbord/116268898402046?fref=ts

So enjoyed your post. Kay and Betty Moody, who owned the place with the pond near the Seneca mall, were great friends. Betty worked as a waitresses at Kay's. She told me a story about how Dr. Fee, Wayne E. Dr. Had fish for dinner and put the head of it under a unused coffee cup that was discovered later to their amusement and annoyance. Can't remember if it was the next customer or staff that was surprised by the fish head.

As a native Oil Citian you probably went to Kay's a lot when you lived here. Another place I need to try before it is gone is Famores. I have heard so much about it but never been.
