Homophones

Feb 09, 2005 14:52

Arrrgggghhhh.... homophones are driving me crazy! It all started at Christmas, when my whole extended family was sitting at a restaurant, and we started naming sets of homophones (words that sound the same, mean different things, and are spelled differently). And I started recording them, and now I can't quit...

:look And I am up to 393 sets of homophones :look

The rules are:
1. No contractions (EDIT: Remove this rule; replace with "no words from other languages, unless they don't have a commonly used English translation." For example -- no using "eau" as a homophone for "oh." This one will definitely involve some judgement calls, I know... which leads to Rule 1 1/2.
1 1/2. Egere is the Supreme Arbiter of Homophone Usage -- the SAHU! All bow down and pay homage to the SAHU!!!!! :P END EDIT)
2. No "doubling up" by using plural, -ed, -ing, etc. -- unless doing so creates a totally new homophone set. For example, "plain-plane" is one, but then I can't use "plains-planes" as another. On the other hand, I can use the plural "sighs" to pair with "size."
3. No proper nouns.
4. "Wh" does not equal "w" -- "which" and "witch" are not homophones.
5. Ummm, there might be some more rules that I've forgotten; if so, I'll put 'em in when I think of 'em!

So, if I can successfully accomplish my first LJ-cut, I shall include here my list as it currently stands:
