That's right people. This Sunday I actually took TIME out of my life to stop and view the magic that is the Tony's.. and I have to say I am definitely not impressed.
It was like watching a bigger and more fabulous yet just as cheesy and self-absorbed version of YAE paper plate awards.. Why the hell was Mr. Conrick Jr. singing anything at all.. If I wanted Frank Sinatra to sing at the Tony's I'd have muted the TV and played Luck Be a Lady. Get a life!
Now there WERE some good parts of the show that I liked... one of them was drinking to Liza Minelli every time she came on TV. "A shot for LiZa everyone!" Yes. That was quite memorable in itself. I also thought it was ridiculous that History Boys and The Drowsy Chaperone won just about every award imaginable (that was worth winning anyway) but the Color Purple was granted the honor of getting nominated for every awards imaginable.. that was worth winning.. and then, as if to say "Hey we're not racist" they go ahead and let them get ONE award... the best female Lead... what the hell? Can we say "Pity/Charity award"
I can just hear them now. "We did our part for the NAACP by allowing Color Purple to win at least ONE Tony."
The only other part that I did enjoy was the Dreamgirls Movie TV Spot that aired somewhere in there. BEYONCE I LOVE YOU!!!!! But the speeches and what not... ridiculous...
The only difference between this and the Movie awards ceremonies.. is that when Movie actors come up to give their speeches.. they STOP acting when they get up to recieve their award... Tony's recipients feel it is their compelled duty to trick themselves into believing they are fooling us with their over-acting, and faux-excitement... Just get the FUCK off the stage. We don't care about your life story!
That coupled with the sudden and random promotions of Mary Poppins, A Chorus Line, and other upcoming Broadway shows made me think I was watching a Drama-Version of the Superbowl.. The right people who care about theater watch for the awards.. while the people who watch it for any other reason will see the commercials...
Oh Tony's... what happened to you?
I was, however, glad to see James Earl Jones and Alfrie Woodard, among a few other people on stage. I'm just sad I had to start watching them when they've become nothing more than a gimmick.
