I've finally caught up on my Lost watching, so I was able to watch this episode live. And what an episode it was!
WTF?! Jacob and MIB are brothers - okay, I can see that. Allison Janney is their crazy-ass step-mom - got it. Jacob is actually a whiny bitch - whoa.
Seriously, I've always been in the 'Jacob is the good guy' camp and now...I'm not so sure. Yes, he's the protector of the island - but really...he's just jealous. And maybe a bit...special (not in the save-the-world way, more in the sit-in-the-back-and-eat-paste way). I mean...I DON'T EVEN KNOW!
Crazy kills a young woman right after she gives birth. Then she raises the boys in isolation and does everything to preserve Jacob's innocence but not MIB's. MIB learns the truth and plans to leave, but not before his brother blindly beats on him cause mommy can't be wrong. 30 years pass with the boys living separate but having the occasional play date. Crazy finds out that MIB has a plan to leave so decides the best solution is to bash his head in and murder the people he's been living with most of his life. Then she takes Jacob, who is jealous/whiny/confused/anxious, to fulfill his 'destiny'. And after that little outing Crazy goes back to the cave and gets knifed by MIB. He is clearly grief-stricken and distraught, driven to kill by her own actions cause prior to the head bashing he didn't appear to want her dead. Also, this is apparently what she wanted (more on this in the next paragraph). Of course that's when Jacob walks in, and with his blind faith in mommy he doesn't wait for an explanation - just attacks his brother (who doesn't try to defend himself). Then Handi-capable Jacob tosses MIB in the one place that no one is ever, ever supposed to enter AND out pops Smokey. My, isn't our little 'protector' going to turn red? Followed by a touching scene where Jacob lays his family to rest. Giving us Adam and Eve.
Now, as for Crazy wanting to die. It gets me thinking about how this has 'all happened before'. I think that Crazy was the previous 'Jacob'. She is the protector of the Island. AND...I think that she had a sibling of her own, probably a sister, who was MIB. That's how she knows what would happen if someone ever went into the water. Somewhere along the line her MIB got killed, meaning that the cycle would have to be reset soon (ie - Jacob and MIB). With that in mind, it means that the new Jacob and MIB are probably trundling around. Many assume that its Jack or James or Hurley, but I think that the Candidate isn't the next Jacob or MIB. I think that those roles are going to fall to Aaron or Charlie or Ji Yeon or baby!LaFleur and that the Candidate is something completely different. But I could be wrong. Either way, we'll all know soon - 3 1/2 more hours to be exact.
I honestly don't think that ALL of our questions are going to be answered and I'm okay with that. Lost is a complex show that has a thousand layers and has stayed relative true to real life in the vein that not everything gets wrapped up in a neat little bow. I think that we'll get answers to the big over arching questions, closure for the characters (in both universes), but that it will be clear that the story is always going to keep going beyond what we see. Just my two-very long winded-cents.
Also - V? I marathoned it the other day and I'm totally digging this show...or maybe its just seeing EM on my screen again. Either way, I'm not complaining.
