Where else in the world are conditions so lovely? One can wake up for a surf/swim, go hiking in virgin forests accompanied by cool breezy weather with sun overhead, buy produce and roadside eggs from local farmers (honesty box for money) and finish the day up with a few wineries only to make it back to where you rest your head with all the necessary ingredients to make a magnificent dinner. Going to bed? You will have to fall asleep to the sing song of the delightful kookaburra, local owls and endangered chirpy cockatoos.
As a good friend once said to me: "you have the good life on lock down."
PEMBERTON:
The bicentennial tree is an unbelievably tall and sturdy tree that is a forest fire watch station. We climbed the steel runged 85 meters and took a look at the surrounding Karri forest.
The flies around here deserve their own mention, to be fair. Firstly, I have a sneaky suspicion they are on steroids. Secondly, they have injector type noses that insert into your skin whenever they get the chance. These injectors are so long that it almost prevents them from landing on you in the first place! Big bugs in Australia.. not sure why I am consistently surprised.
The area has created magnificent tourist drives that basically feel like a never ending trip through untouched 1920 North Vancouver. After being in the typical desolate Australia for so long, I cannot describe the peace I found doing these drives, Every day is Sunday!
DENMARK:
Balance = $30 bottle of wine and Mac 'n Cheese
Vancouverites rejoice! I still find a special loveliness in rainy days. D will say this will go away after 5 days of it, haha. Nevertheless, the break from smoldering heat was very welcomed. Locals agree that they have been waiting for this years rains for a while. The wine makers are the only ones hoping that the rains don't come!
ALBANY:
Besides the incredible amount of natural energy, Albany has a rare selection of natural wonders. We stumbled upon a beach that was our paradise and completely deserted. That crazy white, squeaky Australia sand kept us frolicking and giggling for the majority of the afternoon. Ripping waves have created natural bridges, gaps and caves around the area. The wind was so strong I couldn't even walk without feeling like someone else had control of my body. When we returned to our van the wind has soaked it with salt water spray from 50m waves below!
We found a caravan park outside of town that just hugged us. Across the bay from the twinkling city in a grassy caravan park with warm showers, warm people and cuddly cats. Sometimes life can be extremely simple.
