I will be the first to admit that I don't like dogs. I never grew up with them and to be honest I think they are just plain gross. They often smell. They slobber They are desperate for attention at every single point of the day. They are loud. They are large. They are territorial occasionally to the point of attacking people who simply walk by their owner's home. Yuck.
This being put aside though, my roommates J + C love dogs. They were in talks with a breeder to get a Golden Retriever puppy and got the news that the puppies wouldn't be around for another 6 months. J searched around online and found a short term adoption program that gives you a dog from the RSPCA that is about to be euthanized. This gives the organization a little more time to find them a home and gives one more bed to a troubled/lost dog. It's no puppy generally but the upside is that they are almost always trained and pretty chilled out due to their age.
Some people about 4 hours drive north from Perth found a female Boxer cross wandering around looking like a skeleton. When approached this dog was very friendly and very affectionate. Looking like it hadn't had a meal in days and probably had been without a home for weeks they took her in and called the experts. Being slightly battered and slightly aged, she did not get adopted quickly and her days were numbered to zero. When they got the message from J that he was keen to take a dog in they immediately jumped in the car and drove the 8 hour round trip to help this little cutie and give her a second chance. Talk about last minute luck!
Lola is a calm, beautifully mannered dog. She even knew how to sit and lay down already! She walks great, is good with other dogs and - come to think of it - I haven't even heard her bark yet. I may not like dogs, but this one is pretty cute I guess.. :)
