Fremantle and Perth used to be separate cities connected by trains. Their main reason for existing so far into the "un-pastoral" land was to act as an access for goods coming from all over the world. The two port cities began to grow once convicts began to be shipped over and their labour was used. The precious metal/mineral boom obviously was what put themon the map and Perth more than Fremantle due to it's proximity to the north. Realistically they are only a half hour from eachother but somehow Perth exploded and Fremantle did not.
Perth has 1.7 million people so it has the perfect balance of sprawl and metropolis. These are some shots taken from aboce the city on the South side.
Because at one point Fremantle was very much its own city, it still has a feel all of its own. There are WAY more colonial buildings and the whole place makes you feel a little under dressed. I would be adventerous enough to say the 90% of houses have verandas and rose gradens. It's now attracted the likes of professional artists and hipsters from all over WA so the people watching is pretty awesome as well.
