King! King! King Gainer! Metalu Overman King Gainer!

I went to see Fido with rubeus tonight. It was awesome, though it also kind of catered to my meta-taste. Most of it was a very subtle parody of both life in the '50s and movies in/about the '50s. However, there were a few lines that were laugh-out-loud funny. I really enjoyed it, it was definitely worth seeing in theatres.

I also finished watching Overman King Gainer. To avoid burning through the entire thing in a weekend, I was using episodes as rewards for getting work done.

I really have to say that it's some of the best science fiction I've seen/read in ages. The really wonderful part is that it's not in your face about it. The awesome science fiction and great characterization and all the other typical Tomino deep thinking are just kind of sitting at the side of the stage while the giant robot dance number gets down.

Yes, there is actually a giant robot dance number. If you don't believe me, just watch the opening, courtesy of YouTube:

See? Giant robot dance number.

And a song that gets stuck in your head and tries to get you to dance the "King Gainer", and then tries to get you to get other people to listen to it. but that's an incidental detail.

The one problem is that the show's ending is wide open and just begging for a sequel. It wraps up all the plot threads and stuff, but there's so much more that could be done with it. Fortunately, there is hope. King Gainer appears to have beat out a number of very popular anime on a list of favourite anime series. Of course, this probably means that Tomino's never going to get to do a sequel, just because.
