Maura plans to do a lot of things different in the new year. She plans to drink more beer and eat more grease, for one. Not because she hopes to shorten her life via heart disease or gain a gratuitous amount of weight, but because these are things that Jane does and, therefore, Maura wants to do them, too. It's an excuse, she's aware, but doing these things means Maura gets to watch her best friend a little more closely and hold on to her a little longer. Experience has shown that someday she may not have that chance anymore. So she wants to memorize everything about Jane Rizzoli while she can and she's starting this year.
Jane doesn’t really like wine. She doesn’t like wine and she doesn’t like cocktail dresses. She hates fancy, hoity-toity parties even more. But she plans to go to a hundred of them this year, after she can sit upright again, after she can take a deep breath. She plans to go on Maura Isles’ arm in whatever fashion her best friend will have her. She’ll go to those damned parties and she’ll smile and she won’t be embarrassing and she won’t be picking any wedgies, even if she has to suffer all night. She’ll never be upper-crust, but she can be passable, acceptable. She can be someone Maura is more than happy to be seen with. This year, that’s her plan. For now, she just has to remember to breathe.
