When he almost dies for the twelfth time, he begins drinking tea.  It isn’t coffee, but it can leave him wired. Then again, it’s perfect for nights when he’s tired and achy and knows he won’t sleep, whatever rest he might actually need.  Nightmares tend to be that way, he thinks, but he doesn’t call them that.

His body’s changing, lean and tested muscle taking the place of tight and vain bulk.  He feels faster, hits harder, now shoots straighter than most.  Still, compared to her he’ll never be quick.  She can leave him in her dust - that’s something he’s fine with.  He can watch her devour distance in an elegant blur, feel her pulse like a drum in his temple as he heaves miles behind her.  But he can see her, always see her with his faulty sets of eyes.

It just takes him a bit of time to realize that this isn’t normal. In fact, it’s Abnormal and he’s got another secret to keep. He likes who he is, he likes what he is. He doesn’t want to be a fre-different.

Although he likes Magnus, he doesn’t want to be Magnus. He just wants to be Will.

The greatest man she ever knew wasn’t a man at all. He wasn’t even human.  He ran like someone born to run and lunged like something born to leap - but he had never been born. Created, invented, revolutionized; but not born.

She still thought he slept like a baby, even broken in all the pieces that he was now.  He wasn’t her Sammy anymore, just a shell filled to the eyelids with a degrading echo. The moments when she thought he looked at her were hardest, the times when she thought he reached for her were the worst.  He was the dying echo, yet here she was degrading, too.

She curled his fist into her hand and thought of Caprica.  She wished they could have seen it together, really seen it. Wished they could have hiked the mountains side by side and that she could have taught him what it really meant to fly.  He’d lived again and again, and she would only live once, but his was the only life she was mourning.  Her lifetime was already spent; even the starlight pulsing thousands of light years from where they’d started was beginning to fade and taking her with it.  She was disappearing and he was already gone; there was nothing much left from the one right thing she’d ever done.

The greatest man she ever knew wasn’t a man at all, but he’d loved the way a man loved and was dying as men did die.  She couldn’t fault him for that when he’d never faulted her for anything at all. So, she kissed him goodbye and sent him on his way, hoping all the while that he’d be waiting for her in the center of the sun.  Because when she’d done all she had to do, she’d meet him there.

And they’d burn like starlight from here all the way back to where they’d begun.  Her and her truly human man.
