Another first for me this week - bought my first 'real' bicycle. As a kid I had walmart/department store bikes - huffy was a high end brand for me. I always thought there was no real difference and that 'real' bikes were overpriced and just for people who did the tour de france, etc.
last time I rode a bike 'seriously' I was commuting to work in Salt Lake City 14 miles round trip during the summer - for about 5 weeks. that was more than 10 years ago.
about a month ago I got into my head that I'd like to get back into riding. Mike had gotten me a -cheap- walmart bike (was literally the cheapest one they had) about 5 years ago and, while I loved him for it, I was also a bit scared of it. I'm heavy enough that I would bottom out the shocks on it, and it made me nervous (it was a $50 bike).
After doin my research, checking around, finding as many reviews as I could, I took a quick test ride Cannondale Adventure 5 - a hybrid bike, but probably closer to a comfort bike. definitely not a mountain bike or a road bike. a LOT lighter than anything I've ever ridden before, and wow, felt a huge difference. Hard to quantify, but definitely felt more smooth, and hugely more efficient. I was hooked
I picked it up Wednesday, and did my first ride last night - 11 miles, 90 minutes. if the online calorie calculators are right, that burned about 1200 calories given my weight. Rode most of it on the Heritage rail trail - a few road crossings, but mostly quiet, wooded and gravel. Will definitely do that again, and loved it. didn't really feel it until the last mile - and that was also because thats where the only hills were. But wow - I'm hooked :)
