i see what you mean about mental help vs. prison (where jacko would have undoubtedly been either killed or completely destroyed in some other way). but i think this has far reaching implications in the world of child molestation. basically, he just got a huge fucking pat on the back and was told that every sick and nasty thing he did was totally fine. most people would agree that he's oddly childlike, and this just implanted in his confused, perverted, simple brain the notion that he can remain a child for the rest of his life and continue his deviant ways, as long as they're not abusive. i don't think he abused these kids, but he acted around them in a manner that would ONLY be befitting of a child acting around another child.

as to the broader implications, the world of child porn/molestation is a private world which easily conceals its predators. it's a lot easier to catch a murderer than it is to catch some perverted creep sitting in his basement, selling photos of little girls and jacking off into diapers. because of privacy laws, it's a relatively easy crime to get away with (just look at the nambla website for proof of that). to child molesters and kiddie porn addicts everywhere, this is not really a wake-up call as much as it is a subtle hint to just do a better job of covering their tracks. this trial teaches them that as long as they can act in secrecy and behind closed doors, their sick ways can continue.
