I Wanna Be A Master

A Pokemon Master??? Well, yes. But also this:

So... you know how I'm like... staunchly opposed to grad school? Well... funny story... (Counterpoint: not enough ellipsis... and hawks are awesome...)

So the Modern Languages department has come up with a new program. A one-year MA in applied second language acquisition: http://ml.hss.cmu.edu/ml/MA/ma-about.html. Basically, a MA for people who wanted to instruct foreign languages (which would be ESL for me since Russian isn't offered).

This... might be a good idea. On the one hand, I could see this program being a huge stepping stone into a career I could definitely see myself doing. I've been told I'd be a good teacher, and if I'm going to be teaching anything (that isn't Latin... but that's a different story), it's going to be English, particularly grammar and semantics. However, this could also be a terrible idea. If I suck at grad school, I'm going to know right away... and if that happens, then I don't get to drop from a PhD program with an MA as a consolation. I'll just be wasting money.

Grad school aside, I also recently determined that I only need like 8/9 classes and a senior thesis to graduate. That's only about two semesters of work, and I have three semesters of undergrad left. So... I could graduate a semester early and save myself $25,000. However... there would be that awkward spring semester where I wouldn't be a student (even if I were to do the grad program, I couldn't start until the fall, I believe). I'm not convinced missing the spring semester of my senior year is a good idea. I love Carnival and all the crazy that goes with it too much. So... I need a reason to pay that student activity fee... (although, I could try being a part-time student? I do have a job... and I could use more hours at that job...)

We'll see. The day after my birthday the spring 2011 course catalog comes out. Which means I'll be talking to my adviser (the coolest guy, Tom Werner) about two days after my birthday. Perhaps I'll mention this.

Oh yeah, my birthday is in a few weeks. Cool. I should get a state-issued ID so I can legally go to the Cheesecake Factory and order a fruity, girly beverage with my delicious, delicious meal and then perhaps even a coffee-licious beverage to go with my delicious, delicious cheesecake.
