We landed on the moon 40 years ago.

"But why, some say, the moon? Why choose this as our goal? And they may well ask why climb the highest mountain? Why, 35 years ago, fly the Atlantic? Why does Rice play Texas?" - JFK, 9/12/1962.

This quote was so very appropriate, given that I was at the Kennedy Center for NASA and the National Symphony Orchestra's free special event celebrating the 40th anniversary of the lunar landing with my friend from Austin who works in the office of Lloyd Doggett, the Austin (and South Texas) congressman, who was also in attendance with his wife.

The program, performed by the National Symphony Orchestra, was as follows:
R Strauss - 2001 Fanfare
Holst- Mars, Saturn and Jupiter from The Planets, narrated by Buzz Aldrin and Scott Altman (accompanied by images of the respective planets)
Williams- Theme from Lost in Space
Various- Star Trek Themes
Williams- Title Music from Star Wars
Clark- Talk About Love (feat. Jamia Nash, who is 12)
Dvorak- Song of the Moon from Rusalka (feat. Denyce Graaves)
Clark- Way Up There (feat. Chaka Khan)
Trad. - America The Beautiful, arr. Dragon (feat. US Army Chorus and Alumni)

With an encore of the Stars and Stripes Forever with the most awesome piccolo solo EVER.

So much fun! There were also incredible astronauts and other important people in attendance... sitting in the front section of the orchestra felt pretty amazing! And I have a pretty book commemorating all of the Apollo missions too. :-) JFK was pretty awesome. So is NASA.
