sooo last night i was doing my lesson plans, trying to figure out what to teach these kids this week. i figured i'd still do Halloween music since Halloween is coming up this week. i found a cute little song on some website called The Pumpkin March - the words were provided but there was no sheet music, just a little 30 second clip of the song.

sooo i decided to try to be creative and recreate the song myself using Reason. i only had the first 30 seconds' worth to go off of, but i thought i had the general feel of it down, or at least enough to be able to guess how the rest would go. have a listen if you'd like:

original - i'd suggest turning down your volume a bit before listening to this & don't mind the silly children's voices. song will most likely sound very corny to anyone over the age of 10

my version (no words, since you can only program instruments in Reason :P)

i don't have my keyboard here at this house so i had to do the whole thing by just clicking all the notes in one at a time. tried to keep it simple - drum loop, bass, piano, eerie ghosty sounds.

i just played a simple piano accompaniment myself when i taught the kids the song. then i put on the recording & as it turned out, i think they might've kinda liked it too much. some of them got all excited when they heard a song with a drum beat that sounds something like what they would listen to on the radio. some kids started dancing all around and trying to go up on the stage (music class is in the auditorium where i work, which pretty much sucks). later i had the students go on the stage and march around in a circle while singing (changing directions each time a new section of the song came up) but that didn't really go so well. the circle kept getting smaller & smaller to the point that they couldn't really walk/march. sigh

i'm doing the usual 'reflect on how things went and try to think of ways to improve for the next day' routine. i certainly am being challeneged at this job, but i feel like it's not in the right way. i think if i were in a different district i might be experiencing more success.

being a music teacher, hmm
