Well, I just got a new friend for Peanuts. Peanuts isn't willing to play with him yet, though. They're still in the circling and sniffing (with an occasional hiss) stage of their acquaintanceship.
The new little tomcat is called Squawker. I named him that because he has an incredibly loud voice. He's only eight weeks old, but I can hear him across the house. It's hard to believe that something that small can produce that much volume. He's very talkative, too; whenever he wants something, or just wants me to notice him, he starts yelling. He also has an imperious personality. If I don't give him bits of my food, he hops right up and snatches it. He's already gotten pieces of chicken and shrimp from my Lo Mein, cream cheese from my bagel, and chunks of clam from my clam chowder.
I love cats with idiosyncratic personalities. Fortunately, he's also very sociable and people-friendly. I'm glad that he has a good temperament, because it's hard to tell when you're trying to pick out a kitten.
bettywithin came over yesterday, and Squawky hopped on his shoulder right away. and also lay on his lap looking like a little monkey. I wish he could stretch out on my lap like that, but that's basically impossible, since I am unable to sit in a comfortable position due to my back trouble. He still gets on my lap anyway, though.
Squawker is black with rusty stripes on his sides, a patch of white on his chest, and some white sprinkles on his legs. He's going to be a longhair. He's already growing a layer of long guard hairs above his soft, fluffy kitten-fur. I think he's got some Persian in him.
I have to keep the door to the back shut to keep Squawky out of the basement. He's not big enough to get down the stairs safely yet, and it's also dirty and damp down there, so I don't want him walking around there until his paw pads are thicker. Peanuts, however, has taken to staying down the basement for long periods of time, strangely enough. I think it makes him feel secure on his territory, especially with a door between him and the little interloper. Hopefully, he'll get used to Squawky before long, and then they'll be playmates.
