There aren't many days when I wish to be invisible and today didn't start out that way, and really it was only for a moment because I am practically invisible inside my apartment. I'm sick, I've skipped work and it is so silly that the only saturday I have off, I'm sick... except I only have it off because I am sick. Anyhow, I woke up around 10am and layed around a bit, made myself a few fresh cups of lemonade, finished watching Ghandi (which I began last night), then showered and left for the city around noon. I knew I shouldn't have been walking around the city a) because I might run in to someone from work who would report back that I was doing some home shopping b) because I'm sick and I really should have been in bed or atleast on my couch watching the last of my netflix videos.... which I'll get to once I'm done venting.
Darren Palestine sent me a text message, reminding me that he moved to New York. I called him.... then he called me back while I was in Bed Bath and Beyond. I told him where I was, he exclaimed "No you're not"
To which I replied "Yes you are! are you here too?"
So I met him and his sister at the delivery check out and we exchanged a friendly but, somewhat awkward handfull of words and then we parted ways again... I probably won't see him for at least a month.
I proceeded to lug my window fan around the store, which I later found does little to oleviate the heat in my 6X13 room. I ended up buying mostly everything on my list and more:
"A/C"
Bed props
2 Under-bed storage bins
6 Garbage bags for $3.99 (that are 3 sizes too small and not even biodegradable)
Soap dish (from the antique store on the way to the JMZ)
Utencil holder (bamboo)
Dish drying rack (also bamboo, but not on my list)
Cutting board (also bamboo and also not on my list)
A nifty strainer that is just a flat piece of plastic that you cover the pot or bowl with, rather than having an actual strainer thats impossible to clean
A nifty measuring cup
a nifty tablespoon/teaspoon measurer
and a bamboo utencil dryer as an accessory to my rack
all not on my list from the dish rack down.
I managed to spend roughly $200
My dilemma started at checkout... do I have them deliver everything for $27 and carry it all up the stairs myself? I'm sick... this is such a bad idea, why did I even come here? Oh right, Gwen is moving in and the place needs to look good. Ugh, but then if I don't spend the money I'll just make myself more sick by pushing myself...
I had the guys at the exit patch me up some handles on my under-bed storage bins, which I managed to fit everything else inside of (including the window fan, excluding the bed props). They weren't too heavy, but just heavy enough for me to know it would be a hassle to get them home.
So, the whole way home I made up riddles I knew had only one answer, which I didn't like, and they always began in spanish:
"Mandi esta enferma...tiene dos.... packages" I couldnt figure out the rest in spanish.
So.... Mandi is sick... she has two packages and two options 1: she can pay a cab driver $18 to get her home quicker, then pull her packages up the stairs or 2: she can save money to compensate for the amount she just blew on things she may or may not need and take the subway.
I found myself weighing out my options all the way to the subway, down the stairs I went, and it was one of those tall revolving doors I wouldn't make it through... and there was no station attendant to watch me swipe the card to unlock the "emergency" door for me. So I almost headed back up the stairs but a young man noticed my struggle and opened the emergency door from the inside, setting off the alarm.
I continued without swiping and thanked him. I went down more stairs, took the F V downtown, transfered at Delancy to the J M Z where I climbed up more stairs and got off at Marcy. So my riddles began again...
Mandi esta enferma, tiene dos... packages and she has to climb six flights of stairs... does she a)leave the package with more value at the bottom of the stairs b)the package with the window fan-which someone would be more inclined to steal at first sight or c) carry them both upstairs and collapse and go to sleep.
and who should I run in to but "hey, miss"
Well, I didn't run in to him, I saw him and his comrades hanging out on the corner next to my building and my riddles became something else:
Mandi esta enferma, cansada, y.... annoyed and she wants to get home without a problem, does she a) notice the kid before he notices her and say something obnoxious to him or b) pretend to be invisible for 30 seconds in hopes that he will not notice her at all
So I kept walking with my head high, incase he decided to lash out with a comment about my belly or hair, but he didn't see me, probably cause I didn't have the dog.
and I trekked up all 6 flights of stairs only to put myself to work, moving my mattress and boxspring to put the props under the bed frame, then I washed any dishes I could and put them on my new dish rack. I installed the window fan, unwrapped everything else and stored things in their proper place then went back out with the dog to buy more lemons.
I'm exhausted and I've taken the last two days off work to regain some strength but I honestly feel like shit and I didn't even drop off my laundry and I haven't seen Gwen.
Ugh, things aren't so bad though. They could always be worse.
