So, I am a good little Canadian and have voted.
...and, as I come home from voting, the results are already pretty much in and it looks to be the Conservatives getting another minority government.
We're pretty much going to be in the same position as we were in the last election, except that the Liberals are hurting. Which is bad, because for Canada, the NDP is just too left wing. Jack Layton is wonderful and I voted for him, but his party just doesn't have the strength to win over Canada.
The Liberals need to get rid of Stephane Dion. Period. They had real opportunity in this election to capitalise on the economic uncertainty and some mis-steps during the campaign, but they didn't. And Stephane Dion comes across as ineffectual, with little to no charisma, let alone as having any certainty as to what to do to fix the mess that is the world-wide economy and the way the electorate has been feeling for the last four to six years, now. They are the party that appeals to the wider left, but right now they are failing at that - and in my belief, because the vote in Quebec goes to the Bloc when it doesn't go to the Liberals, that means that the Conservatives have an advantage.
Sigh. I feel like this campaign was too short, and didn't really do much to change anything. Except give the Conservatives more seats, and really, really fucking depress me. I'm watching the predictions and the Conservatives seem to be up to 142 - not a majority, but the closer they are to a majority...
Then again, they just referenced Joe Clark and how he lost his government because he over-estimated the power of a strong minority, so.
Sigh. Just...sigh. It's kinda sad, but I'm actually more excited and emotional over the U.S. election right now, because I see more potential, more cause for hope there.
