God consists of three coexistent, co-eternal persons. (Father, Son, Holy Spirit. -- The Trinity)
God says He is love. (1 John 4:16)
And explains his definition of love as: Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. - excerpts from 1 Corinthians 13:4-13
God is forgiving, gracious, and merciful.
He gave us free-will because love is only love if chosen. And it wouldn't be love if we were forced.
He paved a way for us to heaven through the sacrifice of Christ. (Which was necessary because the "penalty for sin is death" and He loved us so much He wanted us to choose salvation.)
That was a pretty topical answer. But God can't really be explained, He can only be felt. Though you do learn a lot about His character through Christ. Through the Bible. And through people. (When we're being good. ;)) We are created in His image after all.
