Blood from a turnip...

Well, the last time I was able to give blood was in 2003. Since then, my hematocrit levels have been way too low - not low enough to be a health hazard, just low enough that I can't give ( Read more... )

May I ask, what is NIH? Because I loathe the US Red Cross and they won't let me donate (let's just say that it revolves around their homophobic agenda and leave it at that), so if I could donate elsewhere I would do so.

National Institutes of Health, but they also ask those questions. It's a Federal homophobia, not just Red Crass.

WOOT! Good for you! I gave blood only once successfully myself - back in 1994 I believe it was. Every other time I've gone to try, my hematocrit levels have also been too low. I never heard anything about my platelets though, or this new device you speak of. The hour-long attachment to the pump doesn't sound pleasant, I must say. How did you spend that hour, could you read? Or doze? I would probably prefer either of those options to just sitting there.

I could read, but only because they had to use the one-armed-only setup (couldn't find a good vein in my other one).

They offered the option of watching a DVD.
