Country scenes

Blue skies with rows of cotton-white clouds over midwestern maize fields, a wooden country house with a century-old oak tree nearby. Along the dusty road I walk towards the house and the warm country wind caresses my hair. The rustling of corn around, squeaky sounds from birds deep in the crown of the oak, and my own whistling only disturb the heavy serenity entrenched into this land. In the yard, I see the bonnet of a Cadillac so old that it's impossible to tell its original colour. The car's left headlight is broken, and its rear disappears into the shadow of the oak. But its tyres are brand new: they fit the rusty carcass as much as a new pair of lacquered brogues would fit an old and dusty, patched suit on a similarly old bloke. The windscreen is decorated here and there with white drops - courtesy of feathery singers up from the oak. The car stands as an epitome of the times long gone; it has stood there for so long that it now seems the extension of the house.
