The final issue of Smallville Magazine came in to the bookstore where I work today (technically yesterday), so of course I had to buy it. Here are some Tom-related quotes from the people who were interviewed:
They asked Callum Blue about working out and bulking up to play Zod and here's part of his quote: "I want Zod to be an all-rounder and have a physical presence as well. Tom Welling is a big guy so I want to establish that [opposition]."
The question was asked to Peterson & Souders if Tom is more involved now that he has a co-executive producer credit: Kelly Souders responded: "Absolutely. He's really stepped up. Tom has been doing some producing responsibilities here and there over the last several years. He's been directing and getting more increasingly involved, but this year, Tom's helping with different ideas and dealing with issues as they come up in production. And whenever he's not on set, Tom is trying to sit in on meetings. He's a busy guy, and I don't know how he does it all.
Off topic, but I find it quite hilarious that Peterson says that he thought Requiem was going to be the fan-favorite of last year.
There was also an interview with Michael Rohl who has directed episodes like Fanatic, Arrow, and Bizarro. He gets asked what impresses him most about the Smallville cast. Here's the Tom-related part of his answer: "The cast is led by Tom, who is a great director, and has a future in anything he wants to do in this business. He has a muscle for the stuff that he brings to Clark. When we're on the set discussing scenes, it's not surface stuff he brings up; he's digging deep. By that example, all the other actors dig as deep as he does, so you get this amazing creative environment."
Next up is stunt coordinator, Jacob Rupp: "Tom's quite handy on wires," says Rupp. "It's not the most comfortable thing in the world, but he gets it done quite well..." Says Rupp, "Tom's got a really enthusiastic attitude, which after eight years is quite remarkable. Of all the shows I've worked on, none of the Smallville actors comes across as jaded."
Serinda Swann (Zatanna) is also interviewed. She's asked about working with the cast. She says the normal "well-oiled machine," stuff and then this: "Justin [Hartley] is hilarious. He's his own little television show. You can just sit down and he'll entertain you forever. Tom [Welling] is a classy guy and really nice. Erica [Durance] was awesome and I didn't get to work with Allison [Mack] that much because she was really sick during the first few days I was shooting, but she was a trooper. She'd be lying down, they'd call for her, and she'd get up to act. It showed a lot of professionalism on her part."
I think that's it for Tom quotes. I know I promised to transcribe the quotes about Tom from the previous issue, and I haven't forgotten, I just haven't gotten around to doing it yet.
I guess I'm going to miss the magazine for its tid-bits about Tommy, but hopefully, we can continue to read interviews like this in other places.
