For the scrolling thing with PgUp/PgDn but wanting to use them for diagonals... Are Num-/Num+ being used for anything at the moment? For that matter, don't at least some of the things on the numpad use different scancodes than the non-numpad keys? Even if the PgUp/PgDn keys are the same scancodes, you could always use the Num# keys instead, like Oregon Trail did back when I played it on an IBM PS/2 50Z at school.
I think the difference between INT and WIS is basically like the difference between "book smarts" vs "street smarts", if that makes sense.
Heh, I remember having a pretty good Diablo II LOD character where I split my points basically 50/50 between Strength and Vitality with the occasional point or two into Dex if needed. Didn't need to boost dex too often though, it was a druid using mauls (big hammers, low dex requirements). Just call up a couple helpers, turn into a bear, and maul anything that gets in my way. Between that and a few of my items having life leech on them, I could just wade through herds of hell cows slaughtering everything in sight while higher-level people were getting slaughtered by them. Fun stuff.
Welll I'm averse to requiring the numpad by default, since playing a game that requires both a numpad and regular keyboard use really sucks on laptops and phones and so forth. I'll probably have a vim-mode, too, for people who like that (me). I just think the arrow keys should work, and if they do, then something else needs to fill in the other four directions.
"Street smarts" seem like they'd be contained entirely within the player, though, not the character. :V
