Songs to Learn - New Batch For Me

Apr 04, 2003 08:05

Yup, it's definitely time for me to learn a new batch of songs. That way, when Otto ignores whatever I sing at him at BiCamp this year (if anything- I'm still miffed by his inattention) I'll have plenty of "you suck" songs to sing at him afterwards. ;) Just kidding. I haven't set a bunch of songs to heart for my own pleasure since I was preparing to hike the Maine section of the Appalachian Trail. My Trail Name is Wildsong, since I sing nonstop when I'm hiking alone. I probably won't start to set these to heart 'til I'm in Seattle (or later) but I still want to begin making the list.

Lisa Loeb - Every Day
Lisa Loeb - Kick Start
Lisa Loeb - You Don't Know Me
Lisa Loeb - All Day
Lisa Loeb - Falling In Love
Lisa Loeb - Wishing Heart
Tori Amos - The Wrong Band
Tori Amos - Winter
Indigo Girls - Touch Me Fall
Indigo Girls - Fare Thee Well
Eartha Kitt - Montonous
Eartha Kitt - Lovin' Spree

Hmm, looks like I'll have to transcript Eartha Kitt's lyrics myself. They don't seem to exist on the web . . .

Everyday

Goodbye my love
I am going
I am slowing you down.
I can feel you stop breathing when I come around,
I'm slowing you down.

Everyday
Everyday
Everyday
Everyday
Love turns it's back just to stand in my way.

Goodbye my love
You don't get me,
You don't let me inside.
You once held me close when you wanted to hide.
You pulled me in close just to push me aside.
Goodbye.

Everyday
Everyday
Everyday
Everyday
Love turns it's back just to stand in my way.

Goodbye my love
I'm going away,
I know you won’t follow me far.
Once I went out just to look at the stars.
I asked you to join me, but you were too tired.
I wanted you to see them too.
Why did I let myself need you?

Everyday
Everyday
Everyday
Everyday

Goodbye my love
I am going
I am slowing you down
I can feel you stop breathing when I come around.
I'm slowing you down.

Everyday
Everyday
Everyday
Everyday love turns it's back just to stand in my way.

Kick Start

We need a kick start,
We need a quick solution.
We need a next step
If we're really going,
If we're really going.

We sit on our couch while we watch our tv,
And the phone doesn't ring and it's perfect.
To be here playing house is no comfort to me,
It's just more of the same again and again and again.

We need a kick start.
We need a quick solution.
We need a next step
If we're really going,
If we're really going.

Trying so hard to dig ourselves out
'Cause we're stuck and we're scared and we're thinking.
Things have to change- it's the thoughts that don't count
Can't something be done?
Don't let this decision drag on.

We need a kick start.
We need a quick solution.
We need a next step
If we're really going,
If we're really going.

We need a big push to reach the right conclusion
So we can get there, if we're really going.
If we're really going, let's go.

We need a quick solution.
We need a next step to reach the right conclusion
We need a kick start.

You Don't Know Me

She has a boyfriend all of a sudden.
She's never had one before.
She's looking for the thumbs up when they're walking through the door.

She's showing him off by making him talk.
She's putting her hand in his pocket.
It shows on her face, what she doesn't say,
What she doesn't say.

You don't know me.
You don't know me at all.
You don't know me.
You don't know me at all.
You don't know me.
You don't know me at all.

She doesn't know that we know,
That we've been here before.
We always pay attention when she walks through the door;
It's the clothes that she chooses,
It's the words that she uses.

She says, "You don't know me.
You don't know me at all.
You don't know me.
You don't know me at all.
You don't know me.
You don't know me at all."

She's trying hard to pretend that it's not really happening,
But we can see her smiling from afar,
We don't see her much anymore,
But we can hear her whistling when she walks to her car.

You don't know me.
You don't know me at all.
You don't know me.
You don't know me at all.
You don't know me.
You don't know me at all.

All Day

I'd play all day if I could,
But I haven't got all the time in the world.

Your head hangs down, hangs down.
Your face so long so long.
Your weight carries, your weight carries so hard.

Your baby brother's playing, and now he's asleep.

And I'd play all day if I could I'd
Run, run away if I could and I'd
Stand in your way if I could but I
Haven't got all the time in the world.

Your head hangs down, hangs down.
Your face so long so long.
Your baby brother would like to say he loves you,
But he can't seem to find you.

He'd like to say I love you but now he's asleep.
He'd like to say I love you,

And I'd play all day if I could I'd
Run, run away if I could and I'd
Stand in your way if I could but I
Haven't got all the time in the world.

Wasting time it's just a stranger, no
Object, no friend of mine.
Here we are and we're
Angry and we're
Wasting time wasting time

And I'd play all day if I could I'd
Run, run away if I could and I'd
Stand in your way if I could but I
Haven't got all the time in the world.

And I'd play all day if I could but I
Haven't got all the time in the world.

Falling In Love

She wanted to be a cowboy,
She was shootin' 'em down,
She was tramping around.

He walked in crooked with the clear blue eyes.
"There's a nice pool in my motel - you want to go for a swim?"
That night he moved in.

The time between meeting and finally leaving is
Sometimes called falling in love.
The time between meeting and finally leaving is
Sometimes called falling in love.

At night she'd wait for the sound of his feet on the doormat,
The sound of his hand on the doorknob,
The sound of her heart beating in her head.
He'd go out playing nickel slots, cause he knew he'd lose -
She didn't know, so she couldn't choose.

One night while sleeping alone in her bed,
The phone rang, she woke up, and sat up and said,
"What time is it?, What time is it?"

"Well it's 5:30 here and it's 2:30 there,
And I won't be home tonight," he said.

The time between meeting and finally leaving is
Sometimes called falling in love.
The time between meeting and finally leaving is
Sometimes called falling in love.

Now she sits in a booth in a diner,
Waiting for someone to take her order,
Waiting for someone to come and sit down.

She rubs the smudge off the photograph, puts it back into her purse.
The grey sky was romantic cause he was holding her hand,
He was her man.

The time between meeting and finally leaving is
Sometimes called falling in love.
The time between meeting and finally leaving is
Sometimes called falling in love.
Sometimes called falling in love.
She wanted to be a cowboy,
She was shootin' 'em down,
She was tramping around.

Wishing Heart

No teacher to follow, no prophet to tell me how,
But I know what I want, I know what I want now.
Like water, it rushes,
It's the last thing you see when you close your eyes,
It's the one place you want to be.
But if it doesn't brush my shoulder, and it doesn't beat my heart,
That's not what I want, that's not where I will start.
I never kissed somebody so that they would break my heart,
That's not what I want.

If you don't know what you're missing
'Cause you don't know where to start,
Follow your wishing heart.

I was restless,
I was restless,
I was restless,
I was restless.
I just want this to be good,
I just want this to be good.
But you don't understand,
You don't understand me, and I want to be understood.

But if it doesn't brush my shoulder,
And it doesn't beat my heart,
That's not what I want - no, that's not where I will start.
I never kissed somebody so that they would break my heart,
That's not what I want.

If we all leap before we crawl, we might fall,
And it's not always candy spun from head to heart,
And it's not always meant to be,
And it's not always up to me.

But if it doesn't brush my shoulders, and it doesn't beat my heart.
That's not what I want, that's not where I will start.
I never kissed somebody so that they would break my heart,
That's not what I want.

If you don't know what you're missing,
'Cause you don't know where to start,
You don't know what you're missing
Follow your wishing heart.

The Wrong Band

I think it's perfectly clear
We're in the wrong band
Ginger is always sincere
Just not to one man
She called me up and she said
You know that I'm drowning
It's the dog trainer again
He says that he thinks that she needs more hands

I think it's perfectly clear
We're in the wrong band
Senator let's be sincere
As much as we can
He called her up and he said
The new prosecutor soon will be wanting a word
So she's got a soft spot for heels and spurs
And there's something believin' in her voice again
Said there's something to believe in
Instead of just leavin'

And she gets her cigars from the sweet fat man
I think it's perfectly clear
We're in the wrong band
Heidi says she'll be sincere
As much as she can
I called her up and I said
You know that I'm drowning
Put on your raincoat again
'Cause even the sun's got a price on it
And there's something believin' in her voice again
Said there's something believin' in her voice
Instead of just leavin'

She said it's time I open my eyes
Don't be afraid to open your eyes
Maybe she's right
Maybe she's right
Maybe she's right
Maybe she's right....

Winter

Snow can wait
I forgot my mittens
Wipe my nose, get my new boots on
I get a little warm in my heart
When I think of winter
I put my hand in my father's glove
I run off
Where the drifts get deeper
Sleeping Beauty trips me with a frown
I hear a voice:
"You must learn to stand up
For yourself
'Cause I can't always be around"

He says when you gonna make up your mind
When you gonna love you as much as I do
When you gonna make up your mind
'Cause things are gonna change so fast
All the white horses are still in bed
I tell you that I'll always want you near
You say that things change, my dear

Boys get discovered
As winter melts
Flowers competing for the sun
Years go by
And I'm here still waiting
Withering where some snowman was
Mirror, mirror
Where's the Crystal Palace
But I only can see myself
Skating around the truth who I am
But I know, Dad, the ice is getting thin

When you gonna make up your mind
When you gonna love you as much as I do
When you gonna make up your mind
'Cause things are gonna change so fast
All the white horses are still in bed
I tell you that I'll always want you near
You say that things change, my dear

Hair is grey
And the fires are burning
So many dreams on the shelf
You say I wanted you to be proud of me
I always wanted that myself

When you gonna make up your mind
When you gonna love you as much as I do
When you gonna make up your mind
'Cause things are gonna change so fast
All the white horses have gone ahead
I tell you that I'll always want you near
You say that things change, my dear
Never change
All the white horses

Touch Me Fall

I'm waking from a dream
The neighborhood is green
All the sounds I've missed all the years
Come down to weddings, death and fears
And all I've heard has been in vain
Like water on a stain

Touch me I'm so beautiful
Rub your hands across my head
Just like this, come with me
It's not worth it if you don't
Are you hiding
I am hiding

Cypress moon bald in june
Like the granite in a stream
Swamp Ophelia I'm torn down
Let your waters let me drown

Touch me I'm so beautiful
Rub your hands across my head
Just like this, come with me
It's not worth it if you don't
Are you crying
I am crying

Jump jump jump so high
Watch me let you down
If I stumble I will stumble
If I fall I will fall
I'm trying to hold it like rain in a river
Everything is getting bigger better
This won't last forever
Touch me fall

Fare Thee Well

Fare thee well, my bright star
I watched your taillights blaze into nothingness
But you were long gone before I ever got to you
Before you blazed past this address

And now I think of having loved and having lost
But never know what it feels like to never love
Who can say what's better when my heart's become the cost
A mere token of a brighter jewel sent from above

Fare thee well, my bright star
The vanity of youth, the color of your eyes
And maybe if I'd fanned the blazing fire of your day-to-day
Or if I'd been older, I'd been wise

Too thick the heat of those long summer evenings
For a cool evening, I began to yearn
But you could only feed upon the things which feed a fire
Waiting to see if i would burn

Fare thee well, my bright star
It was a brief, brilliant, miracle dive
That which I looked up to and I clung to for dear life
Had to burn itself up just to make itself alive

And I caught you then, in your moment of glory
Your last dramatic scene against a night sky stage
With a moment so clear, that it's as if you're still before me
My once in a lifetime star of an age

So fare thee well, my bright star
Last night the tongues of fire circled me around
And this strange season of pain will come to pass
When the healing hands of autumn cool me down
