I can't believe it, I'm finished with my Yankee Swap present a full day early! I suppose it's easier this year, since I only made one. I'll get to take three turns, because Coyote and Tiger both gave me something they bought.
Finishing now means I get a pretty chill two days of other prep: drag the air mattress and all the bedding out of storage, put the two boxes in the hall back in storage, pack two pairs of pyjamas (one to wear at the party, one to sleep in), wrap my presents, ready my teddy bear and scrounge for my $10 entry fee.
Packing
silentstephi 's car is gonna be interesting. I assume I'm going to be squashed in the backseat surrounded by all my stuff. It'll be easier getting home, especially if Tiger makes it out to the party. I won't have the heaviest box, that's a present.
I've been scrambling to get that Yankee Swap gift finished. It only took three days, but it's a new craft, so I had to do the usual. You know, to make great stuff, you have to make okay stuff. To make okay stuff, you have to make bad stuff. To make bad stuff, you have to make abysmal stuff.
Adventure Time taught me that one, but it's very handy. This particular craft was one I've wanted to pick up for a long time, but being willing to get shitty pieces all the way done in the name of practise was really hard for me. I still have one of my okay pieces sitting on my art table. I fucked up the first part of the finishing, now it's waiting for me to unmake it I guess, since I can't finish it properly.
Holiday preparations are well underway. The wire tree I made last year is hanging on sturdy removable hooks, festooned with ribbons and ornaments. There was a dull ache in my heart as I put Peter's ornament back in the bag, but hopefully we'll be good friends by next year and I can hang it again. I'm gonna wait to take pictures until there are presents under it, but I'm planning to clean the rat cage soon. Then wrap and place my bunch o' gifts, and watch that pile grow as my lovers add to it. Perhaps next year I'll sew some stockings in the fall.
New to this year, I made an Advent Wreath! Now that I see how simple it is, I'll either reuse the simple four-candleholders-on-a-hoop skeleton or create my own. The greenery on my wreath is white pine, holly leaves, and bright red holly berries. I made it in church a few Sundays ago, and Coyote said he thought it was professional at first glance! I like it a lot. I got a little book of Advent rituals for families, and I've been doing an Advent ceremony every Monday night.
Last Monday's suggested building blocks, so I broke out our tiny Lego collection and both boys sat on the floor and played with them while I went through the cute little service. Afterwards, I contributed to the awesome Advent spaceship we made together in the glow of two Advent candles.
My Purple Kangaroo menorah is already sitting next to the Advent wreath on my art table. I may make a nativity scene out of toys to go between them: there's one floating around FaceBook this year with two Star Trek: the Next Generation characters as Mary and Joseph. My friend (and fellow artist and toy collector) Brent made another with a pterosaur-angel, so naturally I feel inspired to make my own. Oh! And speaking of toys, I must put a My Little Pony or Star Fairy on top of my Christmas tree. It currently has no topper!
I've already made an Event in Facebook and FetLife about my birthday, though I've only got a handful of "Yes"es. I'm going to celebrate a week after my actual birthday, at a Japanese Steakhouse and then shooting pool and getting "white girl wasted", which is an even funnier phrase when you're a white girl! I'm absolutely delighted that people are even willing to think about doing something with me. Perhaps next year I'll have the patience to wait two weeks to celebrate, and even more people might be able to come along.
Just like I loved last year's Thanksgivukkah, I'm really looking forward to December 22, when I get to do Fourth Advent and Hanukkah on the same night. It's gonna be spectacular! I'd love to have some sort of perfect blend dinner (perhaps like 's family's latkes with baked ham?) but I'm not sure I'll have my act together. And of course, this is a busy time of year for both my bookstore-assistant-manager Coyote and caterer Tiger. But I think busting my butt is making things more cheery for everybody, and that makes it all worth it.
