Best Band of 2005

Dec 18, 2005 16:23

As 2005 comes to a close and I look back on what has happened both good and bad, and instead of doing a year in review, I will once again name the #1 band.  This past year there were ups and downs, pros and cons, joys and disappointments, new verntures and old endeavours.  But thats life, and in life at least one thing remained consistent; Music.  Once again I have chosen the Best Band of the year.  Once again I will explain the criteria:  this is not how many records they sold or how many times they showed up on that gay TRL or whatever.  Nor does the band have to be brand new that year.  I pick the winner based on who I listened to the most and who had the biggest impact on me in the past year.  The previous winners include....

1999- The Tragically Hip
2000- Of A Revolution
2001- New Found Glory
2002- Good Charlotte
2003- Simple Plan
2004- Yellowcard

So without further adieu I give you the nominees for the Best Band of 2005 (in alphabetical order):

Fall Out Boy: A band that originally got me through some boring times at my Senior internship at the Historical Society as some of their songs played on the local Gannon University radio station.  They really broke through this year with a new album that is now on regular rotation on the pop radio stations and MTV.

Frickin A: I first heard this band going to one of my hockey games last year and they played Merry Frickin Christmas.  A very funny song that points out the quirks of the holidays.  I bought their CD and found more witty songs with crazy lyrics, that became some of my anthems at the beginning of the year.  Their music although not well recgonized, gave me a needed pick me up during some hard times.

Relient K:  Another band that really broke in to the mainstream spolitght this past year. This Christian rock crossover band really broke through this year when they hit the mainstream airways of popular music with the release of their new album this past year.  I can remember listening to them on Launch while I was passing the time at the CWI making CD covers.

Something Corporate: The guys from the OC, of course I don't mean the show but the actual place.  A unique sound and absolutley candid song writing, SC not only gave me a number of away messages but meanigful songs that I will never forget.

The Starting Line: This is another band that I was first introduced to as I avoided work at the CWI on Launch.  Originally from Pennsylvania, this band also released a new cd this past year which added a number of great songs to their already long list.  From thier cover songs to their classic hits, The Starting Line were played almost always on my new MP3 player at the gym.

Yellowcard: Last year's winner was once again in regular rotation on my playlist and in my car.  It was actually their first album that I listened to a lot this past year, that had a distinct acoustic sound and lyrics that blow your mind.  Although they did not have a new album this year, they do plan to have one out January 2006 and I am really looking forward to it.

And the winner of the 2005 Band of the year is....

RELIENT K

Congratulations to Relient K for winning the 2005 Best Band of the Year!  Like before I will leave you with a song by Relient K, and although it is hard to choose just one, this one stands out for me.  Enjoy and we will see you again next year.

Relient K- Who I Am Hates Who I've Been

I watched the proverbial sunrise
Coming up over the pacific
And you might think I’m losing my mind
But I will shy away from the specifics
Cause I don't want you to know where I am
Cause then you'll see my heart in the saddest state it’s ever been
And this is no place to try and live my life

Stop right there
That’s exactly where I lost it
See that line
Well I never should've crossed it
Stop right there
Well I never should've said that
It’s the very moment that I wish that I could take back

I'm sorry for the person I became
I'm sorry that it took so long for me to change
I'm ready to be sure I never become that way again
Cause who I am hates who I've been
Who I am hates who I've been

I talked to absolutely no one
Couldn't keep to myself enough
And the things bottled inside had finally begun
To create so much pressure that I'd soon blow up

And I heard the reverberating footsteps
Syncing up to the beating of my heart
And I was positive that unless I got myself together
I would watch me fall apart

And I can’t let that happen again
Cause then you'll see my heart in the saddest state it’s ever been
And this is no place to try and live my life

Who I am hates who I’ve been
And who I am will take the second chance you gave me
Who I am hates who I’ve been
Cause who I’ve been only ever made me

Until next time, I lose my temper with you...Totally? Totally!
