Marshall eyed the refreshments table dubiously. As far as he could tell, nothing was eyeing him back. This should have been a relief - actually, he reflected, it should have been a given, but in his post-Eerie world, his food not shooting hateful looks at him over the rim of the serving bowl was a rare gift from he universe, and not one to be taken lightly - and yet...
"Tod," he said, turning to the birthday boy. "Did you carve runes of summoning into the corn dog batter?"
Tod looked confused. Marshall pointed to the heap of batter-encased sausages that threatened to spill out of their plastic serving tray. Crisp and lightly golden, they were marked along both sides with a repeating chevron pattern he couldn't quite identify.
"Oh," said Tod, his expression clearing. "No, those are just the imprints from the waffle iron."
Marshall blinked.
"You made corn dogs in your waffle iron?" he asked.
Tod shook his head.
"It's not corn," he said. "They're hot dogs in waffle batter. I couldn't get the licensing rights to serve corn dogs, so I improvised. Though actually I think these taste a lot better, so the Loyal Order can suck it."
"Licensing rights?" Marshall repeated blankly.
Tod nodded.
"Fight the power, man," he said.
