Marshall Teller froze in the open doorway, his hands white-knuckled around the folded top of a brown paper grocery bag.
"What is that?" he asked, his tone filled with horror and opprobrium.
"I can explain," said Simon. Behind him, a three-headed devil dog jingled and tinkled, his tongues lolling happily.
"You were supposed to take him to get a Halloween costume," said Marshall. "Why is he wearing antlers?"
"He didn't like any of the Halloween costumes," said Simon. "We tried demon horns and bat wings, even a really cute pumpkin outfit with a tiny green hat shaped like a leaf. He just whimpered and cursed at me in Latin until I took them off."
"Are there bells on those things?" asked Marshall, peering around his formerly-trusted associate in order to get a better look.
Simon sagged.
"Yeah," he said, stepping aside.
"They're red and green," said Marshall.
"They play music too," Simon said quietly.
Marshall sighed.
"Of course they do," he said. "Let me guess - Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer?"
"It's kind of hard to make out," said Simon. "It might be Frosty the Snowman - the sound isn't great and it's a little out of tune."
"It's the middle of October, and you made our hellhound into something that should be pulling the sleigh of a mall Santa," said Marshall. "You're what's wrong with this country."
Simon picked up something red and white from the back of one of the kitchen chairs.
"I got him an ugly Christmas sweater too," he said. He pressed a button and red and green lights twinkled to life, chasing each other across the knitted pattern of prancing reindeer. Sparky barked in approval, his tail wagging furiously. There was a great red bow tied near the tip.
Marshall sighed.
"Of course you did," he said wearily.
