Mrs. Walter-Funk was the sort of plump, grandmotherly old lady whose cheeks were always apple-red, whose eyes twinkled with benign good-humour behind a pair of round wire-framed spectacles, and who always gave the impression of wearing an apron, regardless of what she actually had on. As was the only right and sensible course of action, Marshall regarded her with the same combination of revulsion and fear that he would a large and poisonous spider, or being forced to attend one of Syndi's interminable poetry readings at the Eerie Library.
"A bubble run," he repeated, reaching out reluctantly to take the proffered leaflet.
"Yes dear," said Mrs. Walter-Funk. "To raise money for charity, you know."
Marshall smoothed out the glossy sheet of paper. Bubbles could be anything, he thought. They could be made of burning poison that dissolved a person in acid, or transport you to a different dimension when they popped, or slowly suffocate you within the airless void of their unyielding walls.
"There's a cake stall," Mrs. Walter-Funk added hopefully. "It's all terribly good fun."
"Hmm," said Marshall. He looked up from the printed page and into the forget-me-not blue eyes of his elderly neighbour, which blazed with incandescent light behind the heavy lenses.
"Can I take one of those sponsorship forms?" he asked.
Mrs. Walter-Funk beamed. Marshall beamed back, helpless.
