The sleet that had fallen overnight had turned to ice and the streets and sidewalks of Eerie were slick and treacherous underfoot.
Marshall sat at the large semi-circular window of his parent’s attic, watching his father salt and grit the path to the front door, trying and failing to come up with an excuse for not helping. Down below, Edgar’s breath plumed in the frosty air and he blew into his cupped hands for warmth, the well-worn work gloves and physical labour not enough to keep him warm.
Marshall shivered in sympathy and pulled the layers of blankets tighter around him.
A wan sunbeam slanted through the windowpane, illuminating a pair of binoculars left sitting out after a twenty-four hour UFO vigil had failed to turn up anything beyond the usual Saturn-bound commuter traffic. Marshall picked them up and made a desultory survey of his neighbour’s rooftops.
As usual, the Holmes’ guttering was a sagging graveyard overflowing with dead leaves and half-chewed army men. Down the street, either Bert or Ernie tottered at the top of a tall ladder as he tried to replace some slate tiles blown loose in the latest storm. Ernie, or possibly Bert, stood at the bottom of the ladder to hold it steady. Far off at the crest of the hill, Mary C. Carter’s roof glittered under a layer of frost; evidently whatever lurked in the old house’s attic wasn’t keen on letting the heat escape.
Marshall shifted on the broad window seat, getting up on his knees in order to spy on the downtown area. The World o’ Stuff’s neon sign glowed faintly against the grey overcast, illuminating Mister Radford as he maneuvered a large “No Parking” sign into place above the rooftop garden. The silhouette of a flying saucer stood out black and bold against the white background, bisected by a bright crimson line that cut an angry slash across the image.
Marshall grinned and reached for his sneakers.
“I’m heading out, guys!” he shouted as he sprinted past his laboring father. “Aliens are double parking on Mister Radford’s potager!”
“Marshall!” his dad called, but to no avail.
