Written for Day 23 of the
31daysoffandom October challenge. The prompt I used for this one was "teeth"
There was a giant hand in the playground of Eerie Elementary. Carved from a single block of rough-hewn wood, silvery bark still clinging to it in places, it stood near the school gates with it's fingers curled slightly inwards. At the centre of the great palm was a hole, a raised lip of paler timber creating the illusion of a naturally-occuring hollow where, in some other town, woodland creatures of benign or at least incurious intent might frolic. The outer layer of the sculpture was scorched with the blackened outlines from a hundred tiny hands, but the inside was smooth and shiny, like the well-trodden path down the middle of a much-used footbridge.
Marshall made a face.
"That is really creepy," he said.
Simon glanced at it, shrugged, then turned his attention back to Harley and the torn backpack that was currently spilling his homework all over the muddy ground.
"Yeah, it's weird," he said. "When I went here, it was next to the Jungle Gym 'round the back of the school. Nobody ever went near it back then. I guess that's why it's out here; the school was never going to get their money's worth from the swing set if the kids were too scared to get close."
Marshall examined the small decorative plaque at the statue's base.
"Proudly presented by acclaimed local artist Daisy Pringle, with the help of Eerie Elementary's graduating class of '89."
Simon glanced over, a roll of duct tape in his hand and three safety pins in his teeth.
"No, that can't be right," he said. "I was moved up that year, and there was no graduating class above mine. There weren't enough kids to fill the year or something; I remember sitting at my desk and seeing all the empty classrooms across the corridor through the doorway."
"It says it right here," said Mars, nudging the metal plate with his toe. "Maybe the engravers made a mistake?"
"Maybe," said Simon. He looked down at Harley, who was methodically tearing pages out of a geography textbook and folding them into tiny origami animals. "Maybe from now on we should just run whenever someone mentions municipal artwork."
