Written for Day 18 of the
31daysoffandom October challenge. The prompt I used for this one was "stormy"
The rain was a soft and constant susurration on the attic roof. Heavy cloud banks, deep purple and louring, massed over a sky gone pallid and green with the impending storm. Lightning cracked and for a moment the whole world was white and blinding, before being plunged back into the gloom of the shrouded sky. Thunder rumbled, deep and near, and the force of the downpour intensified. It hissed as it fell in grey sheets and drummed on the slate tiles overhead, filling the gutters and drainpipes so that they burbled and glugged like streams choking on spring melt.
Two mugs, heavy-bottomed and inexpertly painted with a somewhat crooked snowflake motif, sat next to the old-fashioned cathedral-style radio. Half-melted marshmallows sat atop a thick bed of honeyed whip-cream and fine wisps of cinnamon scented steam rose into the air above the gaps where the cream had dissolved. Wind buffeted the house and the dangling fairy lights that provided the only artificial illumination in the small space shook a little, filling the room with dancing shadows edged with soft golden light.
A tangled mass of bedding occupied a patch of cleared floor in the centre of the Secret Spot. It smelled of fabric softener and dryer sheets and was still warm from the metal drum of the tumble dryer. A neat stack of comic books lay to one side, weighed down with a small flashlight placed atop it. Other comics and magazines were strewn about, some of them marked with small bright-coloured post-it notes bearing hand-scrawled annotations. Marshall was chewing a tightly-braided length of strawberry laces, while Simon nodded over a black and white composition book with close-written pages and a torn cover. A mass-manufactured Ouija board sat out on the floor, it’s planchette on a shelf a safe distance away.
There was a flash of motion in one of the dark corners. Marshall stared ahead, rhythmically chewing the red liquorice, as Simon continued to feign a light doze.
The Sleepover Gnomes wore tiny hand-drawn masks, crude depictions of horror movie legends, and they carried heavy black permanent markers, safety razors, and shaving foam. They tittered as they crept forward, the high-pitched giggle of a sleep-deprived adolescent. The boys affected complete ignorance of their presence, Marshall observing from the corner of his eye as one of the gnomes tugged up his trouser leg and began to write rude words on the exposed skin. Simon kept his eyes shut as a quantity of shaving foam was applied to his eyebrows, reminding himself that this was for science and that they would almost certainly not “grow back funny”, despite what Dash had insisted when they invited him to help with the investigation.
He could always brush his fringe forward if it looked really stupid.
From atop the Evidence Locker, concealed behind a collection of Halloween decorations of dubious quality and breath-taking malevolence (quite literally, as several previous owners had suffocated in well-ventilated rooms before Eerie’s premier weirdness investigation duo had located the source of the problem), the red light of the video camera blinked steadily.
