“Thank you Max, for that marvellous introduction”. If you don’t know what that quote is from, you should probably turn back now. We’re once again opening Winifred Sanderson’s book of spells and lighting the black flame candle as we take a look at Hocus Pocus.
It’s hard to believe it’s been 26 years since we saw the villainous Sanderson Sisters pay the price for their crimes in Kenny Ortega’s cult classic. Although Sarah Jessica Parker, Kathy Najimy, and Bette Midler have all gone on to have successful Hollywood careers, you might be asking what the cast of kids is up to now.
Vinessa Shaw (Allison) has appeared in the likes of The Hills Have Eyes (2006), Eyes Wide Shut, and Ray Donovan, while Thora Birch (Dani) made a name for herself with American Beauty and The Walking Dead. But what about Omri Katz’s starring role as the virginal Max?
After already appearing in bizarre sci-fi series Eerie, Indiana, Katz played the floppy-haired Max Dennison in Hocus Pocus. Since 1993, he’s only appeared in a handful of projects including TV movie Dallas: J.R. Returns and a single episode of General Hospital. His last credit was a 2002 short called Journey Into Night.
Now aged 43, Katz is something of a ghost, however, search hard enough and you’ll find what he looks like now. He appeared at last year’s Hocus Pocus 25th Anniversary, and safe to say, lil Max is all grown up.
Katz’s Instagram has just 3,666 followers (spooky reference), but he looks like he’s still living his best life.
@twitgera Max from Hocus Pocus turned into a total daddy, by the way
Although Katz’s IMDb lists him as “retired”, we’re hoping he could be back for the upcoming Hocus Pocus sequel. Apparently, Katz left Tinseltown behind to focus on a career in hairdressing. As you can see from Twitter, there’s still a lot of love for Katz and Max Dennison:
@keith_r_foster If Omri Katz is in the sequel then they should see if he's interested in a new series of Eerie, Indiana in which he's 45, still living with his parents and trying to prove Eerie is the centre of weirdness for the entire planet.
@JaeKay Omri Katz grew up to be a handsome 20 something. #HocusPocus
@JamieDeLine Doing my annual rewatch of ‘Hocus Pocus’ and Omri Katz could still get it.
@UltimateDallas Wishing a Happy 39th Birthday to Omri Katz this Saturday the 30th day of May. All the best Omri.
@VickyBurrows Mega crush on Max out of Hocus Pocus.
@alexiskaymolnar said it before and i'll say it again: omri katz was the *ultimate* babe
Speaking about the upcoming Disney+ revival, it sounds like the Sanderson Sisters are cooking up something new. News of a sequel has been swirling in the cauldron since 2014, but according to Collider, Hocus Pocus 2 is coming to the House of Mouse’s streaming service.
As if we needed any more reason to pay the streaming service’s subscription cost. Better still, sources claim the studio is keen to lure back Najimy, Parker, and Midler.
In 2017, there were reports of a possible remake/reboot, which was quickly panned by Midler. Even though she’d previously said she’d like to return as Winifred Sanderson, she slammed the idea of a remake with new stars playing the troublesome trio.
There no news on whether Katz, Birch, and Shaw could return, but none of them have done that much recently. Birch is arguably the most famous of the bunch, but if Bette’s back, the rest should fall in line. Elsewhere, Workaholics writer and co-producer Jen D’Angelo is working on the script for Hocus Pocus 2. Either way, this is not a drill people, this is not a drill!
